Smudge HATES the new puppy!

First off..you have got to calm down!

Your vibes of nervousness & tension are feeding into Smudge, and making the whole scenario..way worse than what it should be. You have got to understand that Smudge can feel the fact that you are a nervous wreck.

Besides, put your self in her puppys paws, for a sec..here she is defenseless, and Smudge is not minding his manners.

I've had many a 8-9 week old puppy pass thru my doors, and even younger,5-6 week olds. Everyone has thier own way of introducing a new pup to the mix. I held true to how I did things when it came to the day we brought Trapp home.

Smudge in his own right is just a puppy to,but he needs to maybe be reminded of some manners. Plus forgive me if I am not correct, but Smudge has had very little socialization with any other dog,let alone a small puppy.

Maybe your sister should have dropped the bomb a little on you to prepare. Does she have pets? If not, than that could explain the "big surprise"..look sis..MERRY CHRISTMAS,I got you a puppy!

First things first, ya got to find another sleeping place for that babe, and that means tonite. And I would be washing Smudges crate linings. Not that the puppy is dirty, but her scent may drive him crazy all night.. hence ..no sleep for you.

If you have to get a box,and make it comfy for the new arrival.

For the rest of the evening,I would be holding that babe, sit your self on the couch with her,and let Smudge be, let him be himself. He's gonna sniff, nudge, lick, probably even lick where you don't want him to lick..but let him be. Don't stress!!
Tell him to be "gentle with the baby"..just keep a calm voice, and say "be gentle" Gosh knows Smudge does'nt have a mean bone in his body. He's not going to hurt her.Plus she needs to get to know him.

So long as he is not hurting her. My daughter in law calls it "is he violating my baby girl"..meaning Earnhardt licking Lucy & Lexie in those unmentionable spots.

Is someone else there with you tonite? It probably would be helpful if you did have someone,to help you kinda settle in together. Like at potty times, you may need someone to watch the new babe while you tend to Smudge. Since you have no leash or collar.

But honestly, bringing home a new babe really should be all about being positive,fun..clicking & treating Smudge. Remember, you have worked with him on some basic manners, nows the time he needs to shine. Most definately of all..don't stress..he can feel it as well as the new one.

Great advice, Michelle!

Yes, you do need to take a deep breath. Have a quiet evening and keep things calm, but loving and playful. And yes, though you don't have crate today, find a box. Pup should not sleep in Smudge's territory.

Spend time with both pups. Don't forget, the baby is new to all this too and will need some extra care as well.

Good luck! I'm sure it will turn out fine.

p.s. Did you know you were getting this pup? or was it a total surprise? Why, why, why would a breeder allow this?

I had no idea I was getting a dog today. :uhoh: I STILL have not been to sleep, and I have to wake up in less than five hours! :eek2:

I did give her a bath though. I towel dried her off, and she's in the crate to finish drying. I am going to clean the crate out before Smudge returns to it. I have an oversized laundry basket that she can't jump out of. It will only be for one night.

He keeps sniffing her face everytime. Then he won't get out of her face. I've seperated them for now, but he's looking for her every second. Not to attack her (he's never really given the impression he wants to attack - he just bullies).

I could get a video of it, I guess. I don't know how long it would be before I would be able to upload it though. It takes FOREVER to upload even a short video.

Smudge hasn't had much experience with other dogs. He got sick for such a long period of time that I didn't want to risk him getting even more sick. He was even going to go to puppy classes before he got sick.

My sister got a puppy female, because I had been talking about how it would probably be easier on him to introduce a puppy. I always thought it woud be easier for a female and a male to get along.

I love the new puppy, and I hope soon Smudge feels the same way. :(

Wow--congrats on the new pup!

Regardless of how you ended up with her, I think the key is what other's have said. Don't rush it, and treat ANY positive interaction.

I don't have a similar dog/dog experience, but I can tell you that I thought we were going to have to give our kitten back because he kept hissing at Bentley. A week later they were cuddling and sleeping together and are now best friends. It's just a huge adjustment.

Something else to remember is that you should remind Smudge that your relationship is still very important. Spend time one on one with just him (hard to do now, I know) but maintaining that relationship is critical. You don't want him thinking that he's been replaced as that can be difficult to overcome.

On the other hand, try to spend some one on one time with Fluffy, too. She's come into a less than positive situation and is just a baby. Let her know that a) you're in charge but b) you will love and protect her (as the "alpha" should).

Jessica, Tell us the full story... but it will take Smudge time. Maggie is doing great with Zak but it has only been a week today. Smudge is used to having ALL the attention. Baby steps!!

Ya know 3 weeks from now..they are going to be just fine.Honestly!!
Its all new for him,as well as her. After all she just got wisked away from her mom & siblings,it"s all she has ever known.

Sniffing is a good thing, licking, nudging, let him be,as this is his way of determining what she is,and it will believe it or not,it will probably calm her as well, knowing that he approves. There's not a mean bone in Smudge, its just all new to him.

Did the breeder give your sister something from the whelping box,or something that had mom's scent and the other siblings? That often helps. I know Trapp still has the sock that Janet gave to me.Probably not so much as to comfort him now..as he has chewed part of the toe off!

As Corbinam said..spend some good quality time with Smudge, work on his Clicker training, just you & him.do positive things. He will soon learn that he is big brother to his little sister, and I'm telling ya,they will be nuzzling together in no time.

Was I nervous when I brought Trapp home, you bet cha. Just listen to my voice in the video, the night Trapp was here in the house for the first time. You will be able to hear Brian say to me "baby just be calm, every thing will be fine".

I was more nervous with Trapp & Bumper,as here I was with this bouncy little puppy, and a blind cat. And Bumper is not used to bouncy anything in her life here with us. So adjustments for sure, she was a priority,as well as Trapp,as we did'nt want any real cat clawing moments with her & him.

I still get nervous, but now I know that there isn't anything that I feel is of danger to him or her.As they play very well together, usually on her terms though.

It won't take long, just stay as you are on Smudge's routine, and somehow you will be able to get the new bundle going in the same routine as well as the weeks progress.

Try to have a relaxing, bonding night~Get some rest!

See, I'm not a sable snob like the rest of my family.

I will tell ya..Brian made it very clear to me the other night our next pup will also be a sable..and here I thought he was wanting a bi-black as well as I wanted. Guess we were on the wrong page~ Go figure.

I love them all,I want one of every color.~
