Smudge HATES the new puppy!

you're right Caro... You decide how the 'pack' interacts and behaves... and intercede when you don't like something. Also a very cute story about the break out artist LOL

Jessica, once you get some sleep and over the shock, voila what's one more Sheltie? ;) I cannot WAIT for the photos, lolz
Oh man if you ever read that I got another sheltie, please have me committed guys... I cannot take care of another dog and two cats and work full time trying to have a career oh and make a living, lol

Well first off welcome to the new tri girl. Lots of good advise from everyone. .I agree with Caro, now is the time to a be the leader and protect the puppy. It sounds as if Smudge is just curious and wants to find out about her. But if he is over the top, he needs a time out. I just put my dogs on a down stay,right side me. It just gives them a chance to calm down. The same goes if the puppy is bugging Smudge and he is getting fed up(isn't happening now but may) I give the pup a timeout or distract them away from the older dog. I never want the older dog to get so harassed by the younger one that they feel the need to defend themselves. Both need to learn to get along and your in charge. Don't worry about hurting feelings they'll get over it.

I sure alot of the excitement is because you were not prepared. Once you get her settled in I'm sure things will go better.

Congratulations Jessica!!! What a surprise. I am sure once it all sinks in and everyone settles, Smudge and the new pup will be best of friends. I love having two and they love each other to death. Everyone has given you wonderful advice. Just be calm and relax and take lots of pictures!

I think a giant spider would be in order. Except I'm afraid of them myself. :uhoh: Here is Fluffy on her second day home:

Her fur has a very odd texture to it. It feels like a terrycloth towel. I consider myself to do a fairly decent job on brushing Smudge and keeping him fairly clean. Her fur is so thick, soft, and wooly that I think it could mat very easily. I've heard that the coats on the different color shelties are different. Is this true?

Also, a few more questions.

I finally got her to eat, but she still refuses to drink. This means that she has possibly not had anything to drink since Friday. She may or may not have had a drink before she came home. Any suggestions on how to get her to drink? She's on TOTW, and so she HAS to drink. I put some water in a bowl, and tapped the bowl. She will lick the outer rim of the bowl, but will not go for the actual water in the dish. She got maybe a half a lick, and that's it.

Question number two. Her ears sit on te side of her head. I would like to try to glue her ears. You can see in the picture how her ears set. Any suggestions? :confused2:

Tomorrow is her first vet visit. I decided today to not let them interact until after she got the clear from the vet. She doesn't act sick, but if she is the last thing I need is for Smudge to get sick as well. If the vet gives her the ok then we'll start from scratch after the appointment.

I told my mom about Fluffy and she said, "You mean a dog?" No, mom. A kangeroo rat. :rolleyes2:

Add water to her food. That usually does the trick. If she still doesn't drink water then I would use a syringe to squirt water into her mouth. The last thing you need is a dehydrated puppy.

I do see what you mean about her ears. My breeder had Bailey's ears taped with a string in between the ears. This helped them stay on top. If you can't figure out how to tape or glue her ears, maybe you can ask the lady who grooms smudge? She might know.
 
Sca got a puppy cold about 1 day after he got home and got a small bit dehydrated. The vet gave him fluids and recommended added a small amount of gatoraide to his water. With him it was for the minerals but the bit of sweet might attract her (but don't make it a habit). I am sure the vet will give you the advice you need though. As to the ears Sca's were taped so I don't know since I gave up and let them point later.

I was thinking about that myself. :yes: I will ask her what she thinks. Smudge is WAAAAAAY overdue for a bath anyway. :dead: I might wait a while longer and possibly take them both at the same time. I've never seen a sheltie whose ears sat beside their head! :eek2:

I did sprinkle a good splash of water on her food while she was eating it. She kept going over to the water bowl, sniffing it. It's like she really wanted a drink, but for some reason wouldn't. So if she's not drinking by tomorrow I will 100% mention it to the vet.
