Smudge HATES the new puppy!

Last year when I brought Sweetie home I had went to LOOK at puppies as I was wanting another Sheltie. My husband was finally in agreement If I found the right puppy I could get it. Well we left in a blizzard to look at this breeders puppies. I had to be picked up at the end of their drive as it was not passable in our car. I went up while he waited. When I got there and went in Sweetie came right to me and wouldnt leave my side. I petted her and looked at the puppies . The breeder told me if I knew anyone who wanted a older dog Sweetie was available for $50 and a spay contract. Without anymore thinking I said I Want her. She had me sign some paperwork and and I paid her and off in the snow we went to the car. after getting her home I was so stressed I dont know why. My chihuahas were mad but Buddy was happy to have a friend. Sweetie on the other hand was scared and didnt fit in. I think my STRESS was a factor in how she felt. Once I calmed down it wasnt long and the dogs all found their spots. We now are one big happy family and they all know Mommy LOVES all her babies. Once in awhile Pita still feels the need to get a mouth full of Sweeties fur.....

I did get her to drink...from a pouring water bottle. So maybe one of those fancy fountains would be a good idea. She won't drink unless it pours.

So any suggestions about the whole mounting business? :confused2: Now that I stop to think about it, I'm pretty sure that was the problem yesterday. Like I said - he's not been attacking her. He does still go for her face, but today he done a lot more rear sniffing.

The mounting thing could possibly not even be a sexual thing. But instead an act of dominance. Females at times will even mount a male...

I think Smudge and Fluffy just have to learn who is who and establish who is going to be the dominant member. It is just a normal thing. Once they have all that straightened out they'll be fine.
 
Jessica, sometimes mounting is just a way dogs show dominance over each other. Its not always sexual. My girl dogs will mount my sons chihuahuas when he visits . they will be playing then next thing you know pita will be mounting her sister...they are fixed..
 
It's a good thing I am taking her to the vet tomorrow! I figured after eating the TOTW she would have stomach problems. Smudge did, and so I was sure she would, too. Well, she had stomach problems all over the living room carpet.

I have NEVER seen anything like it. There was large amounts of grass, long, thin pieces of plastic, WORMS, foil, and god knows what else. When I was at work last night there was a jar of busted pickles. I thought it was a maggot from the pickles that was on me. I'm betting it's a tape worm.

God knows how long this poor puppy has had these worms. :mad: I'm not saying they are tapeworms, but they are some kind of worm. They look like tapeworms. I didn't see a flea on her though!

Arg. :mad: If it is tapeworms I'm going to ask the vet if Smudge should get a tapeworm pill just in case.

I have seen this in my son's two tea cups chi's. When it happened the first time my son called me and asked what should he do? Well,I told him there is nothing to worry about. Lucy (oldest) was mounting her younger sister. So it was just a dominance thing.

We have had it happen here with two females many a time,and both were spayed. And I've seen Earnhardt have some pretty interesting "hip action",but not be near Eric's two chi's..but definately in the area. And he's neutured. They are both spayed.

What is happening here with Trapp,is that every time he & Earnhardt play,and they are wrestling,Trapp will put his whole hind end right over Earnhardts face. I have it on video,where Trapp is almost contorted,with his back end way up high in the air. Silly pups~
 
Ok, where to start....this thread is starting to meander all over the place:

1) Water - yes, the different water is most probably why she's not drinking. Mix your normal well water with bottled water, and gradually decrease the amount of bottled until she's gotten used to it. I know some breeders actually do send home water with their pups for that reason alone. I don't think you need to pay good money for a water fountain.

2) Launching her on TOTW from whatever she was eating before, is definitely cause tummy upset. If you can find out what she was eating before and transition over 2 to 3 weeks, you'll all be alot happier!

3) Mounting - sounds like dominance to me. Do not leave those two pups unattended together until things settle down.

4) Difference in coats: Yes, I notice a huge difference between Bacca's and Indy's coat. Indy's is very soft - almost too much so! It still feels like a pup's, and with his thick undercoat, he is just one wooly cuddle bear! It stick's straight out from his body. Bacca's is longer, more feathery and more wiry, with very little undercoat. When I had Ginnie (a merle), her coat was extremely wiry. I don't know if these are differences of coat colours, or just individual dogs.

5) Ears....if you are thinking about gluing, now is the time. But if you are going to do it, it's at least a 6 to 8 month committment. As you say, her ears are very wide set. I don't think just gluing between the ears is going to do it. You'll probably need to do the full meal deal (moleskins with yarn or Japanese tape)....lots of posts on this already, but also check out Sheltie Talk and the Illustrated Guide to Sheltie Grooming. I believe also Narmowen's blog has instructions as well.

WOW.....

I am just reading this. Please know that I say the following with all of the best intentions in mind....including you, Smudge, and the new puppy.

I am probably not going to have a very popular opinion, here, but this is what I think.

1) You should call the breeder and return the dog. I have several reasons for thinking this but the first few things that come to my mind is that Smudge is just recovering from mange, two weeks ago you couldn't AFFORD to feed Smudge dog food, you didn't have the money to buy a can of pumpkin. How on EARTH will you have the money for vet care and food for the new pup.

2) After you return the puppy, you need to have a talk with your sister, about the responsibilities of dog ownership. It is NEVER OK to purchase an animal for someone who does not have the means to take care of the pet properly and is unaware that they are getting a new dog.

3) The stress the you are exhibiting over this forum, one hour after getting the puppy, and the amount of time you are spending responding to the questions, tells me that you just do not have the maturity for another dog. Your time should be spent with the puppy, enjoying the puppy and working with Smudge, not stressing out over it on the internet. This is whole endeavor is not well thought out, and the poor baby is going to totally pay for it.

I sense how much you care for Smudge, and I know what a caring person you are, so I hope you will really take these things into consideration. I really believe that this will be the best for all of you, without any harm being done to the puppy.

True, and if this baby is full of worms too... sounds like some breeder problems... you don't want to have to deal with some of Smudge's difficulties all over again.
