Soft poo - I know I am probably just panicking

haven't read the other replies, but did you change his food over gradually? if not that would bring softer poo. also, if I were you, I would not let him eat those nylabones, but that is only my opinion.

He went from two types of food to just the Butchers, Vicki. The butchers was a 'little extra' he would have with his dry to spice it up, but I can't get the dry food he was on for love nor money!

I bought him a different dry food to gradually introduce over the next week, but the little blighter won't touch it:lol:I just soaked a small handful to get him started, drained it and put it with the butchers, but he only ate the butchers. Even managed to sort out the bits of soaked dry stuff that were muddled in the butchers.

I'm starting to think I have a Butchers dog, at least until he is grown and can switch to raw.

BTW, I haven't given him another nylabone in case he eats it all again, I think we will stick to softer, puppy treats. Though I found him munching on one of the enormous roast bones I buy for Cadbury at lunchtime - it was bigger than him and he was dragging it across the floor!

I think I have a handful here!

Would of loved to of seen him dragging that big bone. How cute and where was the camera??? I used to give Zak nylabones but my vet said she has seen broken teeth from them and would rather a kong. Glad he got a clean bill of health and is ready to go! For us in the US what is Butchers?

Congrats on your new puppy, he is absolutely adorable!

I agree, don't feed him anymore Nylabones. Also, I wouldn't feed him all canned dog food either. Get a good quality (a named meat source [like chicken, lamb, etc] as the 1st ingredient) dry dog food and only add a little Butcher's mixed in. Canned food is much more water, and usually has more meat and meat by products than dry.

If the soft stools persist, and there is no medical problem, feeding him some cooked rice with a small amount of cooked hamburger meat will soothe his stomach and should firm his stools, then slowly add in his regular food after his diarrhea is better.

Did the vet do a stool sample?

Sophie, I just wanted to weigh in on the dog food thing.

Firstly, I think you can switch to raw pretty soon. I know Rachael has posted before about her puppies eating raw, and same with Shelli. I'm not the expert here, just wanted to throw that out there.

Also, if it were me, I would be hesitant to just feed wet food until the pup was older. I think you shouldn't start the whole "I get to choose what I eat" thing, and also, I think harder foods are good for their teeth, especially as they get older and start teething.

I would start adding some dry food to the Butcher's, and slowly phase out the wet food. It might take a couple tries, but I bet he will eat the dry food eventually, especially when he realizes that's all he'll get.

I just would be worried about allowing him to be picky right from the get go.

Just my two cents :)

I don't know what Butchers is but it sounds for sure like Merlin loves it.. I am glad that you haven't given him another nylabone.. I'm sure he really enjoys the roast bone..

You do remind me of me sometimes! When I brought Revel home the following day he did some runny looking poo with a trace of blood in it:eek2: I was frantic and on the phone to his breeder and she said it was simply the stress of the last couple of days and not to worry unless it got a lot worse. She was right:razz:. Us new puppy mums do worry! Neither of my two would eat the breeder's food after a week. Revel was raised on raw tripe etc and did fine on it. Yogi came on Eukanuba and even with the pressure of another dog, he would not eat it. Unusually he wasn't keen on the canned Pedigree puppy either so I put him onto Pedigree Professional (dry) puppy food and left it for him to eat in the night when all was quiet and it did the trick.

The soft poo is most likely due to all the changes and should sort itself out. Butchers is a good food that they all seem to like and he has been eating it previously so it's not so much of a change. I would be inclined to let him settle in first then after a week to ten days make any other changes as may be necessary. SheepofBlue is right about the water as well. I always take 'home' water with me on show days and did it for the rabbits as well when I showed them, just in case.
Looking forward to more pictures soon:winkgrin:
PS Now you mention it I seem to remember the puppy Nylabones having the same effect on one of mine (Yogi?). They seem to be better for older puppies.

You can start him on raw anytime. My pups were weaned to raw at 4wks. We used course ground whole chicken or boneless chicken then added a protein or organ meats every week or 2. I think we went heart, turkey, liver, kidney, etc Diva also still nursed them sometimes until 9 wks until I said enough is enough and force dried her up.(They would badger her and she would give in:rolleyes2:). They started munching on whole chicken thighs at about 7 wks. We just watch to make sure they were cruching the bones up and didn't need to add some ground whole. Aimed for that 80% meat, 10% bone 10% organ(50/50 kdney/liver) balance over time.

Too funny about Cadbury's bone. Sounds so sheltie to me.

Thanks all. His poo is back to normal, so I think it was the nylabone that did it.

I'm nervous about switching to raw so young as I am frightened I will get the nutrition wrong and mess up Merlin for life. He just seems so delicate compared to a lab puppy and I am on tenterhooks all the time!

Julia, that's exactly how I went! I think having waited so long as well I don't want anything to happen to him.

I do like the Butchers, it is the only wet food I am happy to feed Cadbury on occasion. For the US guys this is Butchers

I like it because it has no nasty additives. I confess I am not big on dry food, probably because all my pets have always had canned food and I just can't get my head around dry food.
