Something caught in his throat?

Did you say it happens every day? Our boy Baron had an episode of that after his neutering surgery... Turned out, he had a throat infection/irritation from the tube they put down there during surgery. I was told that this can happen. Smudge was just spayed last week, right? I'd keep an eye on it and if it continues...he might have a throat infection requiring antibiotics. When our boy was having trouble...it was like he had something stuck in his throat and he was gagging, but nothing would come up. His little head would kind of jerk forward like he was trying to dislodge something. We even ended up at the ER over the 4th of July holiday (of course over a holiday weekend..lol).. The ER checked him for Parvo (which was totally unnecessary). We ended up back at our own vet the following day and he knew right away what the problem was....a sore throat ;-). Just something to think about.

I know the local honey trick worked here..no more scratching,licking,and Earnhardts leg is just about healed.Amazing what it has done. Thanks to Granite for that tip! I tought it was an old wives tale,but not~

Sure hope that Smudge does'nt have kennel cough,this poor little guy has had it tough,as well as you Jess.

May I ask what you mean by "local" honey?? Is this the same as store bought, or are you talking...fresh from the hive??

After calming down I've decided it's his vitamin. I listened to kennel cough YouTube videos, and his problem is nothing like that at all. I'm going to take him off the vitamins for a few days (the Vibrant Pets should be here in a soon anyway) and see how that goes. If I take him off the vitamin and he still does it I'm taking him to the vet no questions asked. It only happens in the morning when I give him his vitamin. The other times he doesn't choke.

If it's only happening after you give him his vitamin...I'm betting that's the culprit. I'm sure you are keeping a close eye on him. Any doubt at all...take him in. It's easier than worrying yourself sick (lol) ;-)..

Of course, how smart of you! I know when I have had surgery I always get a really sore throat because of the tube.

Local honey, means to by it from a local beehive (farmer) who is selling it. A place near you that produces honey.

The theory behind this, is that the bees are getting the nectar from local flowers and therefore, by eating the honey, you are getting "local" allergies, lol. Supposedly by eating the honey from the flowers that are around you, you can help your immune system, and your allergies become less severe. It is a theory that many people strongly believe in.

It is honey that local bee keepers have harvested in your county,or town,so yes fresh from the hive.
We had the dickens of a time,but did locate some at a an outside fruit market. The lady that we bought it from,actually was an allergy sufferer herself,and swears by this method. I am not sure of the exact milage distance,but she told me as long as it was honey that was at least within a 50 mile radious,it was one that could be used.

Honey bought in grocery stores is often not "local" raw honey.

This is very interesting information about "local" honey. I've never heard such a thing? We don't have any allergy trouble with our puppers...but my husband and daughters do. I'll have to go on a search for it and see how it does on them ;-).. Would this be a good thing to give to the puppers once in awhile just for an immune system boost?? Thank you!

lol...thank you ;-)... When I read the post, my thought went right to this "episode" with Baron. We had never experienced a post op sore throat before, so it took us by surprise. We thought he had swallowed something and we might be headed for surgery...ahh!! Turned out to be a much easier "fix" ;-)...

Every once in awhile...Baron will eat something that goes down wrong and you can tell his throat feels funny to him...he's a gulper with goodies! When this happens, we give him some Activia yogurt, or even some frozen yogurt and it helps almost instantly ;-).

How weird! Bacca had the same thing this weekend, as well! That makes 3 dogs in this post.

We had arrived at the cottage and I noticed that one of the dogs had barfed in the grass.

Shortly after, Bacca was huffing/hacking and blowing his cheeks out - as if something stuck. But then it stopped. However, he's been off his food every since. Maybe he hurt his throat too? David actually hand-fed him last night - one kibble at a time (yes, this is the man who said "no" to dogs! )

I'm going to try him on some yoguort shortly and see how he does.

It's possible it was the vitamin, Jessica, and it finally dissolved. I've had my gang get biscuits stuck in various places in their mouths or near the throat in their haste to swallow them whole before Someone Else can get to it. I've had to stick a finger down the throat from time to time, dislodge it from a cheek or the roof of the mouth. It is amazing how this stuff happens. Certainly makes the case for being there when your dog is chewing anything!

I have used a piece of plain bread, when one of mine gulp down a biscuit or something and start hacking. So far that has always worked.

On the other hand one of mine got a piece of that dry grass seed stuck in his throat, and the Vet took care of it - maybe if you have been near any of this type of grass it maybe a consideration.
