The Little Red Caboose Has Pulled Into The Station!

Ugh! I think Cubby is a collie! JK, kinda. I just measured him at 9-1/2 inches at 7-1/2 weeks.

Weeelllllll, it will make dog school easier, I won't have to bend down so far and he likely won't crawl UNDER the baby gate to the cat food/litter. Now I really well get the "is that a collie?" question!

How's this compare to Birch and Spruce?

Um Birch was 10 1/4" at 10 weeks. I remember that because the rule of thumb is10" at 10 weeks are risk going oversize. Spruce was quite a bit smaller as we didn't think he would be over sized.

I would have to look at the charts, but Celtic was 7 1/4 at 7 weeks I think. He is 11 1/4" at 14 weeks and I figure he is going to be 15 or so.

Cubby is going to be a big one but you never know about shelties. It depends on their lines some are bigger and slow down some grow longer. I can tell you if he was related to Birch and Celtic(Grizz) that 18 to 19" would not surprise me.

Congrats Cubby is very cute. His color is like Justice minus the blaze. Justice faded to almost totally red but 10 weeks with a black tail than back to dark mahogany sable as an adult.

His dad is 17" and mom is barely 13". That is ZERO on the help scale. This is going to be interesting!

if you know how big their parents are it can help. Also any siblings or offspring. You can see trends.

Shelties are not a breed you can breed large to small and get medium. I would have guess oversized pups as she was breeding an oversize dog and sheltie have a tendency across the breed to be oversized anyway.

For example, Ember is 13" and both her parents were 16" had I bred her to a 17" male I would have expect all the puppies to maybe be oversize. Maybe even bigger than the sire.

First litter -- Cubby is the biggest. The rest are all quite large but not quite his size. One girl is quite small. Whether that makes her small like her mom or more runt-like small is unknown.

I figured they would be large due to the dad's size, but we didn't much care. We like large dogs so a large sheltie is a good size for us. Fortunately, we have no needs for size or color or ears set or bite or breeding qualities. Just to be a heck of a nice guy and up for adventuring.

Met my neighbors, loved the attention. Next weekend -- meeting grandma!

Think he will look as pretty as Emmy? I would like that! He's tuning in to Dog TV right now.

Awww! Emmy appreciates the compliment! I bet his coloring will be similar! He looks a lot like she did at that age. (Here are pictures of her at 8, 7, and 9 weeks).

You are right! Looks a lot like Emmy did. The shading gives some character and an individual look. I hope he reds up though since his name will be Little Red Caboose.

I am READY to register but I want to wait til his first vet visit so as not to jinx anything.

He's doing really well -- I think he was pretty ready to come home.

Here's the most recent picture I have of her. She's gotten a little reddish. I'm sure he's going to be gorgeous!

And considering what an Aussie lover you are, I think you'll appreciate this picture of her with her best friend. :biggrin2:
