Throwing up

Bentley's surgery @ 2pm

Took Bentley to the vet this morning for a second set of x-rays. The foreign objects are still in his stomach, surrounded by food. She also saw what looked like something in the intestine (just beyond the stomach), but she wasn't sure. There was also a lot of poop, so that was a good sign because it was at least getting past the stomach, but just not out yet. He is also dehydrated, so they will put him on an IV.

We discussed our options, and she feels that because of the food, and also the potential objects in his intestine that he will need to have surgery (rather than using the scope).

She is going to do one more set of x-rays to re-check what she saw in the intestine, and she is also going to do bloodwork (which is good, I guess, since I've been meaning to get his thyroid checked). She said she would call later this morning to let me know what they decided, though she felt strongly it would be surgery around 2 pm today.

I am so worried. I know this is fairly routine, but there is always the chance of something going wrong.

(And, once he does pull through, then I can start worrying about money...this is going to be around $1500-$2000)

Poor Bentley. :( Is he still acting normal or is he starting to feel sick?

I hope surgery goes smoothly and uneventful for Bentley. He'll feel so much better once everything is out of him. I'll continue to keep him in my thoughts. Let us know when he is out of surgery.

Ashely,
Poor guy must just feel awful even if he is acting like himself having to poop that much has got to feel miserable. I understand your worry's and will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us updated as soon as you can. This is a heck of a way to find a new vet!!! Hugs to Bentley I am sure 2:00 can't get her fast enough.

We're all with you in spirit. I know Bentley will come through this with flying colors... Everything will work out financially..somehow it always does ;-). Maybe the vets office will work out a payment plan for you?

Blessings to you and Bentley..that little rascal!

Poor Bentley. :( Is he still acting normal or is he starting to feel sick?

He was definitely acting sick last night and this morning. He sleeps a lot normally, but he slept all night. He also has been laying on the floor more often, and is less likely to get up. He didn't seem to want to sleep on the bed or the couch (maybe it wasn't comfortable?).

And this morning at the vet's he was pathetic. He laid on his side on the tile floor in the exam room. That is so atypical. Normally he would be walking all around, checking everything out, and barking at the dogs he heard. He just laid there, even when the door opened and the vet came in.

Hoping you hear good news this afternoon and that all goes well, Ashley. It's such a worry until you know everything is OK. We'll be waiting for news. Sending hugs to you too!

Thanks for the update, Ashley!

Please let us know what happens this afternoon. I will keep you and Bentley in our thoughts today.

Well, one more update.

Bentley did poop, but it was small and dark. They said they were not able to determine what was in it (some hard material). Also, Bentley's potassium is low (I'm not sure what that means) and his red blood cell count was low, so he's a bit anemic. They think that maybe his stomach lining is irritated and bleeding from the foreign object.

The vet also thought that it's still possible that there is some foreign material that passed his duodenum into his intestine, so she is going to go ahead and to the surgery.

The waiting is terrible!
