Throwing up

Poor Bentley... hopefully the surgery goes smoothly and his recovery is quick. I hope you're holding up OK, too - the waiting is always tough.

Out of surgery

Bentley is out of surgery.

The vet said that she was very glad that they went in (rather than scoping) because there was so much material in his stomach. She said most of it appeared to be leather, but there was so much that she was not able to sort through it all. Luckily all the material was in his stomach (not his intestine), but it took her 30 minutes to remove it all.

The one bad thing is that his stomach lining was very irritated, and is thin in two places. She felt the other side and it seemed okay, but he is at high risk for ulcers now. There is also a small chance of perforation, so he will have to stay at the clinic until at least tomorrow night, if not one more day after that.

She said that if she had known how much was in there she would have gone in on Saturday, but the bulk of the material wasn't visible on the x-ray, so there was no way to know. Bentley also presented with no pain--but I should have known, he is so stoic. The vet couldn't believe that he didn't wince or anything even this morning when she examined him.

I guess it's a good sign that she was able to remove everything, and that he came out of surgery doing well, but we are not out of the woods yet.

I think I may try to stop by and see him this evening (though I'm sure it will be so sad to see him so out of it).

Thanks again for everyone's thoughts, prayers and messages.

He is on IV antibiotics, and will start taking ulcer medication as well.

So glad the vet was able to get it all and that it was only in the stomach. She is right - Shelties do not show pain. I was told they are a very stoic breed.

Prayers for a quick recovery from the surgery and that the stomach lining heals itself.

poor Bentley!
I hope he recovers well.. I guess he's gonna have a liquid only diet for a while with an irritated tummy. and then onto chicken and rice.

My guy eats straw & wicker (any straw hat withing reach is totally eaten).

Here's hoping he heals up completely and decides to never eat leather again!

What a day for you, Ashley.

I am happy to hear that Bentley is out of surgery and that everything was removed. Hopefully he will have a speedy and uneventful recovery. Shelties are very stoic dogs.....almost to their own detriment.

What a good boy (well, for trying to be brave, NOT for eating all that leather).

Take care
Dani

Ditto on what Danisgoat said. Sending get well wishes to Bentley. I feel so bad for him having all that in his gut and thank goodness it was all in his gut. I imagine it would benefit him to have yogurt for a while. I know aloe is very healing. Come home soon Bentley. How has Lexi been today with her big brother?

I've been checking in often in hopes for the good word that's he's out of surgery. Poor little Bentley.... As with a human child, you'd hope it would be a case of "lesson learned," but......"kids will be kids," no matter human or canine ;-). I don't know if you ever saw my post from long ago about our boy Nicholas (passed 6/2007) and how he ate almost 28 inches of a fully in tact nylon lead? Long story short (which I'm NOT good at! lol)...he never showed signs of discomfort, tummy issues...nothing. I knew he'd swallowed it, but x-rays showed zip as he didn't swallow the clasp. The family and surgeon (he had just had his stitches removed from double hip surgery when this happened) .. well, they all convinced me that IF he ate it...he would have chewed it up and if after 3 or 4 days...no symptoms...he would have passed it. The danger timeframe passed by without episode. SIX weeks later...one morning in his crate, he vomited. I jumped up to tend to him and there was the 28 inches of leash..all coiled up as if wrapped around your hand and placed in a pile! Imagine the surprise when I took it in to the doctor.. FYI..Nic's passing had nothing to do with this episode.

You're very lucky something showed up and the surgery was done asap. Please give Bent a gentle hug from us! He'll be home before you know it.

Come home soon Bentley. How has Lexi been today with her big brother?

She has been so distraught! She slept with me on the couch for awhile, and then laid next to the door hoping he would come home. It was really sad. She also would wander around the house and whine. She definitely can't figure out why Bentley isn't here.

That's crazy! And you're right! We are lucky something showed up on the x-ray (I'm not even sure what showed) because the leather didn't show at all.

DH and I just stopped by to see him and my poor baby looked so sad. He was totally out of it (didn't even know I was there) but I petted him and talked to him and told him I would come visit him again tomorrow.

We also got to see a full ziploc bag (sandwich size) of the leather he ate. Apparently it was only 1/4 of what they pulled out. I still don't know what it was from. The leather box he ate was small (1/2 the size of a shoe box), and he only ate maybe 1/2 the top. We may never know.

These Shelties are sneaky little devils with the treasures they eat. I'm so glad Bentley is through the surgery and hope his recovery is easy and quick. It's a good thing they got it all and that you found what it was! It certainly could have been worse if you hadn't figured it out.

Hoping for you and Lexi he gets to come home soon!
