Tick--course of action

My vet told me the only chemical formula that works at all on ticks is K9 Advantix.

You might want to ask about Certifect. It combines Frontline with Amitraz- probably the best tick preventative.
I am not endorsing a product, as my flea lecture stated its all up in the air and Certifect is new, but as the Advantix tick preventative is Permethrin, I would disagree with the statement that Advantix is 'the only formula that works at all on ticks.'

Thanks, Dr. Mac, I will ask about that. I hadn't heard of Certifect. My vet actually made the statement about Advantix being the product that worked best on ticks two seasons ago so perhaps this is out since then.

You can use Advantix if you have cats but you have to make sure to keep the animals separate until the product dries.

We found 2 tics about 2 months ago. We did not have any cold weather this winter so I know it is going to be bad. Our vet had recently swithched us off Frontline and that was when we found the tics. One was fully engorged and I found it on the floor outside her crate (thought it was dirt, boy did.I screem). The other was still attachd to her. They are so hard to find on her b/c she has black fur and black skin. She is back on Frontline and we haven't found any since.

I was walking Danny down the old dirt road and he brushed up against a phragmite. I saw something fall and land on the back of his neck. Sure enough it was a tick. I plucked the nasty thing off of him quickly. Yuck. Good thing I was looking at him. They are creepy.:gaah

Oh I hate ticks too. It looks like we could really have alot of bugs this year since we had a very mild winter. Thanks for the info everyone.

Uggh just jinxed myself. DH found one crawling on Shelby yesterday morning. I think it is going to be a long summer and a miracle if she remains lyme negative.

Yikes. So I'm curious....how does one do a "tick check"? There's just so much fur and undercoat on these guys...and mine don't even have big coats.

Bummer about the Frontline. I didn't even realize the non-Plus one killed ticks. I know in my area, a lot of places have quit selling it because our fleas have become immune or something. It doesn't do anything anymore.

I obviously really don't have a tick problem here in Southern California, however, I try to keep Koji protected due to where we trial for agility.

No suggestions, but I like the apple vinegar suggestion. I cant' recall the brand of vinegar which is best, but I may go to that for Miko. I'm taking him off as much chemicals as possible, including flea stuff. I figure if I can keep Koji clean, he should be fine.

Good luck with whatever you choose. And here's hoping Lexi is just fine. :)

Well, just had to chime in to say that we found a dead one on Bentley yesterday--not engorged, just dead. And, the one on Lexi, upon further thought, I don't think was attached. So maybe the Frontline actually is working?

Anyways, Cheryl, to answer your question, we usually sit down with the dogs on our laps and just pet them ALL OVER while moving their fur and getting down to the skin. They just think we're cuddling so don't usually resist. We also turn them over and check their stomachs and behind their ears a bit more closely because I think that's where they're likely to go.
