True slipping out of her collar!!!

My dogs are Houdinis, and have slipped out of every kind of collar and harness at one time or another. The only collars I have ever had that they don't get out of are the chain ones we use for shows, like these:

I've never tried the braided nylon ones so I don't know if they would be as effective. I personally hate the idea of a choke collar, but I would hate even more having one of my pups slip their collar and run away, get lost or get hit by a car.
 
I agree with I would try a martingale but I do love that harness you made, how cute!!

I end up pulling his collar off sometimes, just a nylon one right over Toffee's head.. til I dangle the leash in my hands... and turn around he's still standing there *sigh* He stopped and I thought he's just sniffing, when really he is peeing, :lol: Another time he slipped out cuz a run away pit bull was trying to get a piece of him at the dogpark PARKING lot :rolleyes2::mad: The pitbull was chasing him, but Toffee still came back to me when I called, and chased the pit away from him, Toffee just kept circling me... I kept trying to get a good hold of the silly pitbull, think I broke a nail, too!! But I digress, lol The owner finally caught up didn't know what got into his sweet dog and I hollered for him to never bring his (*^% (*&ck(*&^ dog to this park so help me god.. I will kick his *&^% etc etc (never saw them again.. )

One thing that is even more important than a slip proof collar is recall and that the dog doesn't think off leash is only game or chase time... I still haven't replaced the nylon collar because I am not scared that he may run away from me; he doesn't cross the street or go off the sidewalk, because I trained that right from the get go... plus I have him off leash a lot in safe places, so to him leash or not is not that big of a difference.

But I am shopping for a martingale now :yes: I hope true doesn't try the Houdini game, I never heard of so many smart, twisty Shelties, lol

I know what you mean. I don't use a regular collar on Fergus at all. He can and does slip it in seconds. I've had good luck with the harness though as long as I get it on right :uhoh::no: but that's another story. Baxter came from rescue with a martingale and I love it. He needs a new one though because he's lost so much weight it's too big now. I also need to get one to try for Fergus.
 
I use a martingale. Bailey has unsuccessfully tried to back out of it a few times. I've heard the ones that are part chain, tighten faster, so that's the one I use.

I use a harness on both Trapp & Jasper.Neither have ever slipped out of one.The harness I use for Trapp is actually his car harness.I got it in Walmart.It's made specifically for travel.

The whole buckle attachment is very wide at the withers.You should find them easily. They come in a box,and the one I purchased was there on a top shelf where the feeding dishes were located.
There is a whole line of products.Car blankets,harness' etc. As for Jaspers harness,his is made by Premier,and is fairly wide strapping,and heavy duty.Nothing flimsy about it.

I'm sure she scared the crap out of you,when she went down the road.Lets hope that you can find something that works soon.

True uses the car harness now. She did great on it for a while....but now she is pulling out of it.

I thought about using the collar and harness as double protection.
 
Here is where common sense needs to prevail. Use a choke collar when walking on a leash, leave it attached to the leash, so it doesn't get left on the dog by mistake, OR, a martingale collar fitted correctly. These collars also become a nifty training device for walking politely.
I know of a sheltie that backed out of a harness and was gone forever. If someone gave one to me, I'd throw it in the trash.
 
Two of my AKK are slippery ones, so when we go somewhere where they need extra hardware, I will clip their EZ Walk harnesses to their collars. *Knock on wood* they haven't slipped that combo yet.
 
I use martingales on Sadie and Ginny. Both have tried unsuccessfully to back out of their martingales. The only other thing I'd use would be a gentle leader head halter.

I'm confused, how could a sheltie back out of a properly adjusted martingale? It doesn't seem possible... :confused2:
 
my DH uses chain collar despite my total disagreement with it, thankfully not often to make it a big deal, all other time we use martingale, and I often use it loose fitted as I do not keep it on Che when in the house.... Che is very good on the leash and I have no problem from pulling, he is total pleasure to go for walks as he does not chase cars or even squirrels when he is on leash... off leash it is totally different matter with squirrels but as my trainer stated, squirrels are vertical animals so if you in forest preserve, squirrel will only run to the nearest tree and giving your dog freedom to chase it might be well worth it, if you in a field and nearest tree is a mile away it might not be a good idea so we compromise ...
