To fit the martingale, I took a regular collar and fit it quite snug around their necks. This would be snugger than you would normally fit a regular collar on a Sheltie since because of their ruff, we tend to leave them looser (hence, why they slip their collars). I then measured the collar (inside), and that was the length that I needed the non-chain portion of the martingale to be. With the addition of the chain, the collar fits loose when not attached to a leash, and tightens up if they pull on the lead (but never to choking - the martingale is designed to stop when the ends come together)
