True slipping out of her collar!!!

I've never tried the braided nylon ones so I don't know if they would be as effective. I personally hate the idea of a choke collar, but I would hate even more having one of my pups slip their collar and run away, get lost or get hit by a car.

Mally's cousin, Mac has a braided nylon one that worked very well when I walked him, when they came to town. It gives so it isn't like it was tight all the time. It seemed like he walked better this time they came out, not pulling, like he respected the collar for what it was used for. My Mally is not a runner, if he slips out of his collar, he will sit down, knowing it is not supposed to be off him on a walk. Also, when he was little, Don taught him to sit before we put his collar and leash on, before going for a walk.
 
This is one thing my husband and I disagree on most all the time. I keep saying I am scared that something will startle Zak and he will back out of his collar. I got the nylon martingale at a show for Maggie and Zak but have not tried it yet. Mark just does not get that they can back out of collars no matter how many times I tell him. I have a friend with 4 shelties and she swears by martingales that she gets a petsmart.

I have the thicker nylon ones, the thinner nylon ones, and the nylon ones with the chain. I find that the nylon one with the chain tightens very quickly and effectively. Some trainers do not like them because the chain can make noise when you walk....but for walks on a busy street I always use this one. The thicken nylon martingale might have a slower reaction time....although I really never had a problem with them and I have used them on all my dogs, as well as my goats, lol. All who are masters of "backing out" of their collars.
 
Sasha doesn't just back...she does this back up with combination shoulder dip, body fold, flip, tuck and roll and......
Then she is free...in about a split second.

HaHa!!! True doesn't just back either....she looks like a bull. True starts bucking over and over. It is really funny to watch.....but I don't let her see me laugh.

Deska can get out of a slip/choke collar, and there is no way its a matter of wrong adjustment - it can be choking him and he can still get out. Doesnt seem matter how tight it is if the dog has a narrow head and a very full mane. I believe Deska's mane gives some 'slippage', he also whips his head to the side before pulling back. There must be some strategy to it because he always uses the same technique. The best I can do to stop him is to change the angle of the lead (pulling it down to the ground).

If only he put his talents to good instead of naughty...

How do you fit your martingale?
 
Same thing happened to us not long ago! He was wearing a step-in collar - backed up and it slid right over his slick fur. I'm very fortunate that it wasn't near a car.

Right now, Luka wears a limited slip collar (a lot like a martingale) - it tightens to a point that you choose but doesn't choke the dog. I'm getting some martingales this summer to try out, as well. He still backs up but is realizing that it's no longer an escape route.

I thinned out his collar fur, and that helped a ton getting it to fit really well.
