Trying to dominate or is it play

Ive actually never watched Cesar....but Im guessing by the sounds of things he would cringe when I lay on the floor and let my dogs run all over me

But anyway I would say its you puppy is just showing you love...heck Noah loves to run in when im laying on the couch and take a flying leap onto me and put his paws up on my chest....It was cute when he only weighed about 12 pounds...at 25something I have hoof prints on my chest But hes a little dog trapped in a big body...he thinks he's 13" and 10 lbs..

Sandstorm chases my husband around the recliner, my husband runs into the bedroom, Sandstorm jumps on him- I think we all (including Cesar) would call this playing. He also does this with his dogs on his show. We will also lay on the floor, Sandstorm will jump over us, cute!

I prefer positive reinforcement with a correction if she is misbehaving. I do not ignore her, because it just doesn't work on my dog. Every dog is different and I think training should vary depending on the individual dog.

I agree, that is also why I watch Cesars show all the time.

Yep, MMM "waits" at the doors and the gates of our house in town because it is on a busy street. At the Lamb Rd (in the middle of no where and the back of beyond) property, he BARRELS out the door ahead of me.

Never once has he questioned who goes out the door of the house in town first. Never once has he waited nicely at the back door of the house on Lamb Rd, but instead about knocks me over to get back to his brook and swamp.

So which is he? Dominant? Submissive? Nah neither, he is just a well adjusted dog who knows subtle differences and is being trained to use his brain.

C.M. would tell me what a nice well adjusted dog I have.

(BTW, I chalk up his niceness to good breeding more so than my training.)

as always, sorry but completely disagree with CM fans.

He puts the dominance theory on top of EVERYTHING a theory which has long been disapproved, but whatever... it makes for good easy fixes on camera and gets more ratings. If it won't work or the owner doesn't have CM's REAL good timing, he just trades dogs with them...

He has very good points about Exercise but more people don't walk their dogs and get pent up energy than there are dominant dogs who want to rule the world

As in all other threads, sorry if you don't agree with the laid out articles by real dog experts.

CM believes that when a dog puts their paws on your shoulders, it is a dominance thing. Every time. Some of us don't believe this is true. So in this case, we believe he is wrong. What's the point of a forum, if we can't express our own views? We will not always agree....but it is great to get a well rounded view of things.

Ofcourse we can express our views, which is what we are doing. Other people on the forum may have very different ones. Because we love our dogs, talking about different training methods and whether they are right or wrong can be a "lively" discussion and provoke different emotions. I just don't want any new comers on the list to think that they are receiving or listening to advice from the wrong source when they are not.

I totally agree with you on C. M., he is great educator and trainer. If one of his messages was implemented by most of the dog owners- GIVE YOUR DOG MORE STRUCTURED EXERCISE- any dog owner will have better behaved dog. C.M. works with really tough breeds which naturally may present problems to many dog owners, as my friend who works in doggie daycare says " I say thanks every day that I have shelties and not other breeds"
OTOH I find that with shelties this need for dominance is simply not there- Che is not submissive, Che is not dominant, he is self assured happy boy that could care less who is the boss in the program.... I do think that letting your dog wait in front of the door is good thing to do for the purpose of developing self control and ability to follow command but not because of dominance issue...
Returning to original topic I am encouraging Che to put his paws on my shoulders when I stand and he is being tall sheltie and me short human almost can do it but I do it as form of stretching his body... hubby plays a " manpile" with him when Che tramps all over DH body and they both love it, it is just a fun game for both...

Sandstorm would love to believe that he is the alpha of our "pack"- nothing timid about him at all. He is, however, not a wolf, but a smiling sheltie. I do love wolves- twice a year our family goes to Ipswich, Massachusetts to visit a family owned, not for profit (educational purposes) wolf pack. It is fascinating to watch the pack interact with each other and how they respect the alpha. They each have their roles, and it works beautifully. Their "owners" know their place with-in the pack, and interact with them in harmony. It is a great place to visit!

It is good breeding, but you have trained him well also!!

Some times when I get down on the floor to play with Zak he puts his front legs on my shoulders. So is he playing or trying to dominate me?

He is playing I think! Ofcourse I suspect he is not barring his teeth and growling either!! Maybe I shouldn't say if he is playing or not- if he tears you limb from limb I would be wrong. (That was a joke)
