Tully needs hip replacement

My mum thought her xray looked like a little bunny rabbit! On the left side there is a clear outline of the femur head and the hip bone, but on the right side there is just a big build up of white at the head of the femur and no clear gap between the femur and pelvis - apparently that's the arthritis. At first I thought OMG, there's something wrong with her left pelvis, later I realised it was the way she was positioned!

So lucky I have insurance. The joint is pretty expensive (apparently smaller = more expensive) and she needs a few days stay so I'm expecting up to $7000. Deska's cost $4,500 with no prosthetics and a very generous surgeon. Then there's travel costs, rehab... It makes my head hurt.

Tully needs a hip replacement

Caro, I'm so sorry your babies, Tully and Deska, and you have to go through this ordeal. I can't imagine the pain Tully must be in. I will keep both Tully and you in my thoughts and prayers and pray a speedy, painless recovery for Tully, How fortunate she is to have you for a caring, loving mommy.

Oh Caro, so sorry to hear this. Poor Tully. On the positive side I know many dogs that have had surgery at a young age and done really well with it. I don't think you did anything wrong, 9 times out of 10 hip dysplasia is genetic and there was always 'something' there. It is just so hard when they are high energy dogs. Thinking of you :hugs

Poor Tully. :( I hope she gets some relief with whatever you decide.

How can you see arthritis on an x-ray? I see that her hips seem to be pushed to one side and one hip is higher than the other.

Look at the little tiny bones in her tail. I don't know why, but I found that fascinating.

The right hip joint where you would see a space(where fluid is normally) you see an area that is patchy and looks like cotton fluff..that is arthritis..

Poor Tully!! Seems like you have luck like me when it rains it pours!!! Hoping for a smooth surgery and recovery!!!

So sorry about Tully's hip. Must be very hard for you. My very best wishes for a successful surgery and speedy and complete recovery.

Prayers and hugs to you and Tully :hugs It's incredible how precisely animals can cover their issues :confused2: Fingers crossed for the operation.

Poor Tully and poor you! At least pet insurance will cover a lot of it but it is a long road to recovery as you well know.
Thinking positive thoughts for you.

Joanne

It is amazing how much those dogs can do with such significant injuries. Best wishes to you and Tully! Out of curiosity were you aware earlier about hip problems or is this totally new finding? I have not done any x rays on my boys but they are on maintenance with chiro and massage... hmm
