Tully's not doing well

Is ibd common in australian shelties? (Correct country I assume since roo poos). We see it in US but not commonly. At least not 3/3 odds which really bothers me

Actually just last week Tully's Specialist was saying vets only really knew about it in breeds with genetic-type IBD (and cats). But the availability of endoscopy for dogs in the last 5 years, and to a lesser extent ultrasounds, has meant all those dogs that were once known for having a 'sensitive tummy' actually are being diagnosed with IBD (canine chronic enteropathy). Then they thought it was an 'old dog' disease, because the bulk of dogs diagnosed at first were old dogs that had a history of tummy upsets. But now as they test more younger dogs they are seeing it in puppies - now that must be heartbreaking.

As for it being in Shelties, well Shelties are a breed that often get stomach upsets and are prone to pancreatitis and gallbladder issues, so I guess Shelties are an at-risk breed. But they aren't a breed known for genetic IBD which is a relief because it means we can possibly prevent it. I'm pretty sure Tully's IBD was because of her counter and table top cruising resulting in bouts of pancreatitis (she has chronic pancreatitis as well as IBD). Deska's maybe from being on an NSAID for many years. But I don't think it's a coincidence they both came back from a year with my mother overweight and with IBD.

Now I'm being really careful and really strict with feeding Della and the puppy. Della has anxiety tummy issues when I got her so I put her on a sensitive tummy food and she's good. Kismet worries me - she can jump like Tully, will eat anything and is constantly hungry. Plus I think she already has a chicken sensitivity. So strict high quality diet for puppy with sparing use of treats and keeping food on the high shelves!

Gavin seemed to have issues when he was younger..always getting runny/soft poop.
Not diarrhea per se, but when you pick it up 2-3 a day you notice.
as soon as we moved to grain free (wellness core), we rarely have issues.

Mine were on Wellness Simple for many years, then they took it off the market here and I was devastated. They were on it because Deska had a chicken allergy and Tully later developed one (turns out chicken is actually the number one food allergen in dogs). Della's on Pro Plan Sensitive, which doesn't have chicken, but it's too high fat for Tully so lucky her is on home cooked (white fish and veg but I'm transitioning her to roo). I tell ya, Tully eats so much better and healthier than me!

Well a bit of a shock. I was told we had an initial consult with the surgeon, but actually he had her booked for surgery. I went and fed her breakfast and didn't take her special food or meds with me. He said it was okay to still do the surgery so I left her behind :(

Feeling so stressed out, totally not prepared. Now I have to grab the food and take it to the other side of town so she can eat when she wakes up.

Ann or anyone with experience - did your guys get antibiotics to take home? I'm so worried about sepsis, because they did biopsies as well, but they aren't going to give her AB.

Gah - stressed out!

Oh wow...I would be shocked too Caro! What time is her surgery? All fingers and paws crossed that the surgery goes well! I'll definitely be saying a prayer for you and Tully tonight! Please keep us posted Caro!
