Update on pups neuro issues

It can't hurt to give it a try, right?

Good luck and let us know what they say. This is all very interesting to me. I have personal experience with this as my sister had a pug that PDE (pug dog encephalitis) and without knowing what she was doing gave her pug a rabies vaccine. The pug died within a week after going into a seizure that the vets could not get her out of. It was awful.

That's horrible. I'm so sorry to hear that. I am terrified at the thought of giving them a vaccination. No way. Humans can get exemptions. My girlfriends father, who was a missionary living abroad, had Hep A in the past and his doctor told him he couldn't be exposed to it again or he might die. Therefor, she had a medical exemption from receiving the Hepatitis vaccinations. We definitely need it for animals, too!

Are you able to get an exemption from vaccinations? I would like to look into what states allow the medical exemption.

Also it makes me so happy to hear Pixie is all better. It almost brings tears to my eyes b/c a lot of dogs just end up on phenobarbital forever, which is what the vets and most suggested doing with mine, and that medicine takes its toll on them in many ways. Holistic care is really amazing if you allow yourself to trust it.

We were very lucky in that my vet practices maintstream and holistic medicine, so he had access to labs that compound prescription holistics and that's what Pixie was on for years. She's not on anything now, and it's been about a year since we took her off the last one. Since she started seizing as such young puppy I refused to put her on phenobarb...she was already on flagl for colitis and I wasn't going to do that to her.

My vet only vaccinates every three years, and we titer for anything other than the required rabies, which I do get. We did skip it the years she had problems, and that's really the only vaccine she gets. Connecticut does require it but I'm not sure who checks...I've never seen the vaccine police. But I guess you do have to be careful.

Good luck Mary! I myself have had a lot more luck with natural medicine than traditional so I really hope you have the same luck with your pups!

Also good luck with the gov't stuff, if any dogs should be exempt from vaccines it should be yours. Those videos you have an your vet records should be more than enough evidents!

That sounds like really positive advice and I'm pleased that you now have some answers as to possible cause and outlook as well.

I'm a great believer in holistic approaches wherever possible. It's interesting what you are saying about the exemptions from vaccinations too. Here in the UK it is still personal choice as to whether to vaccinate or not -unless you need to use boarding kennels when it is virtually always a requirement. Most people get puppies done and maybe the first booster and then every three years up till about 7. My two older ones haven't been vaccinated for some years and I plan to have the titre for Epic to see what his antibodies are when the booster is due (vet messed up his puppy vacs unfortunatly). Certainly with dogs presenting with the symptoms that your two have had, even most of our vets would advocate not vaccinating.

You might find the Canine Health Concern website to be useful if you need additional info at any time to press for exemption. Best of luck with Theo and Lily and give them a hug from me:wink2:

Wish me luck taking Max to the vet today because he is still scratching and his skin is pink. I will also ask for a letter because i do not want to get max his boster this year because his immune system is compromised with the pancreatitus and gall bladder. I also have to spoon feed him to get him started eating and thats not normal either. I believe it is mandatory, thank you for that list, but sometimes it difficult to decipher there english!
I am so sorry for your loss, no one should go through that, we love our shelties like they are our children. Thank you for sharing it definetely help me make my deceision. Thats what makes the forum so wonderful.

You're so kind and nice to say those things! I hope you can get a letter that will allow you to be exempt from the current law. Also, if you're interested, I'd be happy to look up your congressman, should you not be able to get the letter, and you could write him a note requesting the law be changed. I know it seems like a long shot, but it made me feel a little bit better about it. No medical exemptions is just sickening and shows, in my opinion, how the law makers really feel about our pets. :( It's bad enough they aren't required to do testing on the side-effects of these vaccinations and they are allowed to not list ALL ingredients used in dog food on the bag and they are able to add images to dog food bags even if the food being advertised isn't used in the food...but this is just too much for me.

Thinking about you and the pups. Keep us updated. Kate

Thanks to both of you! That website sounds like it will be useful. Yes, I've read about how things are different in Europe as I was interested to see the comparison between here and there. I was happy to see (and not surprised) that their government isn't as intrusive and forceful. I would assume their people would riot a bit more and cause more of a stir than us complacent Americans. ;)

I'll definitely keep you all updated. Lily hasn't had another episode since the one when I posted the video a while back and Theo hasn't had one since September. Thanks so much again for your kind words... they mean so much to us!

Have you found a vet yet that practices natural medicine?

Not locally. There's only two in the state and the closest is an hour away. I don't know that there's much that can be done, really. Dr. Dodds suggested melatonin, which we've started doing. :) I think we're moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in August and there's one there. yay!
