btw...I have have always felt confident about the Canadian producers....Go! Now! Horizen, Orijen, Pronature, and yes, my own brand Perfomatrim.....
These tend to be smaller producers that produce their own brand only.
I was surprised to find out how many big name brands were manufactured by one comany. Scary!

I have to say I am ashamed of my country that so many pet owners have to turn to Canada to have complete peace of mind for pet food. Shame on us.

I second you on that. And the meat sold in the stores isn't much of a step up. We've really let money get the best of us here... it's sad.
I also tend to think there is something more...I remember in 07 with the tainted food, that took weeks to get out what was really going on with the food...ive found once they issue a recall if its a food im feeding I immediately pull it and switch to something else. If it tends to cause cannon butt for a few days so be it, id rather deal with that than have poisoned animals, that can cause life long problems or death.
I saw on a thread on here were someone was still feeding TOW, because they are not in the recall area
?!?!?! This is a common confusion, the food is shipped all over, just because you are not in SC you still have to be concerned. Also sadly the pet food market came to be as a way to use up the unsalvageable parts of meat/animal by products. Its had little federal oversight and I honestly dont see it changing much. Go back to one of the earliest commercial dog foods Kal Kan, which was operated by a horse kill enterprise in the 30s...
I can't find any information on when this contamination occurred. Is the food I bought in early February safe? I'm assuming it is since he has been eating it since then with no issues, but now I'm getting a little worried.

Nevermind, I found this on the TOTW website. Looks like we will be throwing away our food. What a waste of money, I will definitely be calling the company tomorrow!
Diamond Pet Foods, manufacturer of Taste of the Wild Pet Food, has issued a voluntary recall of limited batches of their dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011, and April 7, 2012 due to Salmonella concerns. Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any potential issues this may have caused pet owners and their pets.

I have to admit that I'm schizo on this topic.
On the one hand, I think that Diamond is doing all the right things by recalling product, and I support them for this, knowing the cost to them as a result of this recall. This will cost millions and probably hundreds of jobs as a result.
On the other hand, when you suddenly hear of other issues like seizures in dogs which should not be happening, you have to ask yourself whether or not something else is going on.
All I can say is that I'm asking the questions and will continue to communicate what I hear.

How voluntary is it when the FDA stepped in, tested their food, showed Salmonella and THEN they recalled it? They didn't catch this in the last 6+ months through their "testing" they do. Why didn't they recall this food when complaints started in October? It really isn't "voluntary" in the sense we think of when we hear voluntary. Have you ever had that job where they let you quit vs firing so you won't look as bad? That's how this situation is. It's more to save their butt b/c trust me the law suits are coming now that PEOPLE are hospitalized. They paid out over 3 million in '07 for complaints. They clearly haven't learned.

Our local tv station said a dog is in serious condition at clinic because of Diamond food. On another thread about Daisy being sick I brought up Diamond food even though she is in a different state. They do ship to other states.

I lost my Malamute mix to the tainted gluten that impacted many different varieties of food back in 2005 - kidney failure. (I know it was 2005 because Edan was born in August 2006 and came home April 2007. It was over a year before I was ready to bring another dog home.) I wasn't even aware of the recall until she's already consumed enough to cause kidney problems. She showed no symptoms until it was too late to do anything.
Ever since that I don't take a problem with dog food lightly. Like you, Linda, I'll make a sudden change before feeding a possible tainted food. I'd rather deal with the diarrhea than loose another animal to something I can control to some extent.
