Updated Recall Information

My bag of TOTW has the correct placement of numbers but the best before date is Nov 27. When I was at the store today they told me to bring it back anyways for a credit. I told them there was only a small amount left in it but she repeated that I should bring it back. I decided to go with Fromm Salmon and Tunalina as I didn't want to put Tinsel on the high fat count found in Acana, which is what Phoebe has been on, and to be honest I would like to reduce her fat intake as well as I am always worried about setting off a pancreatitis.
Fingers crossed I don't get a dog with the scoots.

Apparently, there must be a big huge nasty mess in there. Remember when take4roll10 found a completely different looking kibble a few months ago in her bag of TOTW? That is cross contamination. That is why everything is now contaminated, because they have no quality control.

Thank GOODNESS Randi found that kibble and reported it here. I was on TOTW and because of that, decided to find a different brand. I had TOTW on my rotation, and I rapidly dropped it out. Now I am a bit panicked about any other brands and am just rotating through the grain free Fromm varieties.

Thanks for saving us some potential problems, Randi!

I completely forgot about that! Cross-contamination for sure. And they obviously know it, which is why they have pulled so much product.

I'm considering pulling ALL product now even if not with the production codes and best before dates, just to be sure.

I do not trust any Diamond product even the ones not specifically identified. What I do have left of the Chicken Soup is going into the garbage and its codes are not mentioned. I think all of their product is contaminated.

I do have to say, that while erring on the side of caution makes sense (and if I had a dog on any of these foods, I would be having the exact same reaction), I have yet to hear of any of my customer's animals getting sick from any of these products.

And yes, we did carry some of the impacted production codes, so obviously must have sold them as well.

So if you have a 30 lb bag of food that you have been feeding for some weeks and neither you or dog has gotten sick AND is not one of the impacted production runs, then I would not throw it away. If you or dog were going to get sick, this would have happened by now.

Would I buy another bag? Most definitely not. I would be starting to transition my dog to another brand ASAP.

Hmmm... Well Danny has not gotten sick so I may reconsider keeping his present bag. But that's it for me with Diamond after that bag. They haven't identified the source for the salmonella. Where do their ingredients come from? Like others have said it may be more than Salmonella involved.

SOLID GOLD has now been added to list of recalls from salmonella. The food in question is also produced at the Diamond facility which is the center of the recalls.

We've been feeding Canidae Grain Free kibble to our three fur babies for the past two months without incident so no sense taking it back only to start them on a food that may make them sick.

Regarding the recall, I too read that the manufacturer started it not because dogs were getting sick, but people who were handling the food were getting sick. Either way, it's going to cost them millions.

I wish I had the time to prepare home cooked meals for my guys, but not knowing enough about how to supplement, etc., time involved (we both work full time), it's just not possible. What's sad is that even when forking out big bucks for dog food, it's no assurance it won't make them ill.

:gaah

I just got back from the store, we are officially switching Greyson to Petcurean's Now adult formula based on Danielle's recommendation (DPSheltie, thank you!).

After doing a lot of research on this subject, I have decided I won't be feeding Diamond products anymore. It is not worth the risk. Based on their track record, I am sure something like this will be happening again

What a mess , so sorry everyone is going through this! We feed Nutro Natural Choice and I called them just to be safe and sure of no recalls.

We currently have both Lerwick and our cat, Majo, on TOTW. Ugh. Neither one has shown any signs of illness (and neither have we, but then we've always used measuring scoops and washed our hands after handling pet food). It's really too bad. It took us a long time to find a food we were comfortable feeding Lerwick, and I have been really happy with TOTW, but of course we won't be feeding ANY Diamond-produced food after this! Like everyone's been saying, it isn't even this particular recall that has me concerned. It's the pattern. And, like others, I suspect there's more going on here that Diamond either hasn't discovered yet, or hasn't divulged to the public. So, sorry TOTW... but it's over between us. I'm looking to start the transition this weekend, when I can get out to the store to buy new food, but I'm running into some trouble picking a new food!

:gaah

It's really frustrating and challenging, because I've got a lot of factors to consider. I want it to be grain-free. I don't want it to have ever seen the inside of a Diamond plant. I need it to be affordable. And where I am running into the most trouble, is that it cannot contain any kind of poultry/fowl ingredients, as Lerwick cannot tolerate that. :ick

I know TOTW was about the most affordable grain-free food out there, so I am prepared to pay more for another food... but there's "more" and then there's "twice as much," or even more than that. Unfortunately, the only foods that I feel are at all comparable in price are also full of poultry/fowl, and therefore cannot be considered.

So far, the only dry, grain-free kibble I've come up with that do not have some chicken/turkey/duck/etc. (at least, according to their websites) are the Acana Ranchlands and Pacifica formulas, Fromm 4-star Beef Frittata Veg, Orijen 6 Fish, and Wellness Core Ocean Formula. Orijen and Wellness definitely don't fit in the "affordable" category for me, though. They're firmly in "costs twice as much" territory, and I really don't want to be there.

There is one other brand/formula I'm considering, too. Based on another post I saw in the commercial food section of the forum, I looked up Hi-Tek Naturals Grain Free kibble. One of their formulas, the Alaskan fish, doesn't have any poultry/fowl. This one is actually a few cents cheaper than TOTW, and it would definitely be my first choice... but to be honest, I'm not sure the Alaskan Fish variety actually exists! Even the page on their website that lists the ingredients and shows the bag, says "Chicken Meal and Sweet Potato Formula" as the title on the webpage. And although PetFoodDirect.com offers the other two Hi-Tek grain-free formulas, they don't seem to have the Alaskan Fish.

Guess I'm in for an adventure (and possibly a wild goose chase) at the pet supply store tomorrow! Fortunately there is one pet supply store in town that carries all the brands I'm considering, so I will be leaving there with new food for the pets, no matter what!
