Ally is ill

Sharon, many prayers for that Christmas miracle for your darling Ally. That emotional roller coaster between hope and despair is so draining, my heart goes out to you. :hugs

Oh my, I am so sorry you are having to go through such a hard time finding anything for Ally to eat. My heart just aches for you and her!

I know this might sound weird but could you try cat food... Maybe the stronger smell would give her more of an appetite? Not a long term solution but I am grabbing at anything that can get her to consume more!

Continued prayers and virtual hugs... :hugs

I'm praying for a Christmas miracle too! I just hope you find something soon that she really gets an appetite for.:fl

Sorry, I though I posted earlier. What antibiotics is she on? Is it cephalexin? It does cause stomach upsets and I'm very surprised the vet hasn't changed to a different type. Deska gets a very upset stomach on cephalexin and whenever it's prescribed I always get them to switch it to another AB. In fact, sulphonamides work better for kidney infections. I'm allergic to both cephalexin and sulphur drugs and still manage to find an AB to manage a kidney infection. There's definitely a lot of other options out there.

Have you told the vet she is getting too ill on the AB? You just can't have her being this ill for another 2 weeks, poor little tyke, and poor you. You must be tearing your hair out, and you don't want her catching something else over xmas with not getting enough nutrients.

They can also do an antibiotic injection that will cover her for about 2 weeks. That prevents any stomach issues resulting from the antibiotic.

Sharon, I suspect you may have already tried this...but Nutri-Cal is a high calorie nutritional supplement that comes in a tube (like tooth paste) and you just put a dab on the dog's tongue. I have used it for senior dogs who were too picky to eat well and/or sick dogs who were refusing food. Most vets and most dog supply places carry this product.

I am so bummed to hear this news. I can imagine how frustrating this is for you. This is when I wish we could talk to them! Tell us what you like, little girl! I hope the abx clear everything up and she can get back to eating soon. Please keep us posted. Keeping your sweet Ally in my thoughts this Christmas!

She is on Augmentin which is amoxicillin and clavamox. The reason is, nothing was cultured out of her urine although (rare) bacteria was in her urinalysis, so my vet wasn't happy, but needed to use a broad-spectrum. She then added Baytril in as well. The problem is, Ally went off her food before treatment started at all, so not entirely sure what is happening. I am scared to feed her anything too rich due to her history of pancreatitis. :(

Trini, I did think of this but there is so much fat in that stuff, she's been on a bland diet so long because of her pancreatitis so I'm very leery of giving her that. I'm going to ask what my vet thinks of that option tomorrow. I did manage to get a little more pureed dog food into her this morning, will try again at lunch time too since I'm off today. Thanks SO MUCH for your advice and empathy. We all love our pups so much.

Sharon...you are right about the heavy fat content. I hadn't thought of that and with pancreatitis the last thing Ally needs is anything high in fat unless your vet feels that the amount of Nutri-Cal used would be small enough not to be a worry.
