At the emergency vet - again

I thought I'd wait until after Christmas to give an update.

Now I've unstuck Tully's fur from the top of the cast she is moving around more. She wants to walk but keeps falling over and twisting her hip as it goes under her body, but she is such a determined little girl. Della and Kismet are getting better at not knocking Tully over - but Tully will insist on laying in the middle of the walkway to the kitchen - just in case we forget her!

Now the bad news. I spoke to Tully's internal medicine specialist. He said if Tully cannot manage off the steroids (ie if her IBD flares up) then she will have to have the leg amputated. Unfortunatley the risk of infection is just too high. The problem is she is not stable on her other legs so I'm not sure how she would manage with 3 (esp at her age)

Unfortunately she isn't managing off the steroids. She is nauseous and not eating. I did have the option of putting her back on the steroids and delaying things by a week - to allow for the residual from the pond incident to settle down. But I didn't and that was stupid. I got some codeine for her, but as she's refusing to eat she isn't getting the painkiller (but Della and Kismet have gotten to it). Even the vet can't pill her, she's just that good at spitting it out.

We see the ortho specialist on 29 Dec for new cast and to check the leg/hock (esp that there's no infection).

Oh crapola. I was hoping no news was good news. Tully is such a tough little girl but it must just wrench your heart watching her struggle. I hope you get a bit of good news on the 29th vet visit. Sending you support from afar. :hugs Any chance of crushing her pain meds and putting them into yogurt or pumpkin that she might eat?

Tully has a nose for meds, she just spits out anything I try giving her. And of course I'm limited with what I can give because of the IBD. I tried a little pumpkin to get her to eat yesterday and now she's sick today.

So sorry to hear about Tully. At times it used to be hard to give Harley some medication so as Sharon mentioned I used to either open the capsule and pour the powder into something smelly and tasty, or crush the pill into dust and do the same. Will be thinking of you and hope you get some positive news on the 29th!
