That's the problem. If you're breeding to show in AKC conformation, why not stack the deck in your favor as much as possible and avoid producing a severely-penalized fault?
 
I like a small amount of blaze but having said that non of my tri's have had one. Looks are important and with Maggie and Katie had fair amount of tan on their faces and Zak has very little tan- I did not want a dark faced one but here I am with this dark faced boy and I love it. I look for the sparkle in his eyes. I think on Sables a blaze is just beautiful and they don't have to have full white color, mys first one was a sable and she had a small blaze but not a full color. Zak has half a full color much like his dad but he has a line of white all the way around.
 
I'm partial to small blaze in most dogs, but occasionally, as in a golden sable, I prefer no blaze at all - they just look all round "soft" without it. I do not particularly like a large blaze, because I think it detracts from their expression.

Bacca has a pencil blaze right up his snout. Indy has a blaze that comes up to about his eyes. I would prefer his to go up further because he looks like such a devil with his dark eyes and dark fur.

But as some pointed out, its the overall look of the dog itself - including expression - and therefore very individualized - dog to dog.

And now that I read the responses, I agree, with all the things to breed "for", this would have to be bottom of the list! (I'm not sure how much this can be bred, anyway!)

But interesting discussion!
 
thanks for the answer about sable merles. I'm not breeding and Jake is too tall anyways. I just hope the junior judges don't mind :smile2:
 
personally love the blaze- both mine have a blaze. Cranberry has the full collar- Callie has about half a collar. I like the full white ruff and white front legs. Callie has both and turns out so does the Berryboy. Good thing that sheltie fur sheds dirt or he'd have had 10 baths by now :wink2:
 
Reviving an old thread. My sable puppy’s blaze is disappearing. She had a pencil blaze when she’s four months old. At 5.5 months, it’s almost unnoticeable. I’m not totally surprised though because I read somewhere in the past a wide blaze would narrow and a thin one might disappear as a sheltie puppy grows up. Just a little disappointed because I really liked her cute blaze. But she’s still super cute.

Cran still has his blaze and while Callie is gone, I have 3 more shelties with blazes....
Cran puppy Cran adult
Dixie puppy Dixie adult
Jocu puppy Jocu adult (I picked him because of his blaze)
Destin puppy Destin adult

they were all pretty wide to start with so while there was some narrowing, all still have blazes:yes:
