Brooke update

I like to think Gavin appreciates the stroller and wheelchair and everything.
So many people don't understand why we go to the ends of the earth for our pups, but that look says it all.
He definitely is more affectionate than he used to be, but hearing loss has something to do with that I think.

Had a long talk with my friend who is also my retired vet. He's been a vet for 40 years so he's seen a lot. He took a look at Brooke, her gums are still pale which is a concern, but he said at her age her bone marrow will be slower to reproduce the lost red blood cells. She is acting completely normally, just a bit low energy which is to expected if you are anemic. She will continue on the Yunnan Baiyo meds forever.

He said the maximum survival rate after a rupture is 4 months. Of course it can be sooner. But even if they catch this cancer before it ruptures, and remove it, survival rate is still only months. I can't envision putting any dog through a major surgery where the poor dog would be recovering for a good part of the time they have left. The only good thing is this cancer is not painful - unlike most cancers.

So we will just continue spoiling and loving on her, and when the crisis comes, we can hopefully manage to have her pass away at home without the trauma of going to the vet hospital. Just SO HARD to imagine life without my girl though.

Do you have a local vet that does at home euthanasia? I need to look into that at some point (of course I am avoiding that right now).

Any tips for an anemic dog?

Sharon, I'm so happy to hear that Brooke is normal and enjoying life. That is the best possible news, and I pray it continues indefinitely. I know it will still be very hard for you...I well remember the waiting and watching when my Ivy had bladder cancer and we knew the end was coming, but not when. Enjoy every day and take comfort in knowing that Brooke doesn't know she's sick. Sending you hugs. :hugs

Sharon, what great news!
Brooke can surprise you at every turn it seems! Thank goodness for that. Each day is so precious and we know she is in great hands with you as her Sheltie angel!
Blessings for more positive days ahead! Virtual hugs to you and soft pats for Brooke!

I know having said goodbye to Mr Chance at my home and not in a hospital setting was the best thing I ever did. It is not always possible. The company Laps of Love came to the house. The best vet ever that worked with me and Mr Chance for almost a year. No one wants to think about it. It just hurts too much.

Sharon, it is really good news that Brooke should have some extended time. But I know that it can also be a very hard time emotionally for you. Every good day is a joy and every little bump in the road brings the dread that the end is near. Try to simply cherish each day without allowing fears of what is to come darken the precious time you have with Brooke...but I know too well from experience that this can be easier said than done. Brooke doesn't worry about tomorrow...as long as her people are happy and love her she will be happy. Hopes for many, many, many happy days/weeks/months to come!!!
