Brooke update

Sharon, it is really good news that Brooke should have some extended time. But I know that it can also be a very hard time emotionally for you. Every good day is a joy and every little bump in the road brings the dread that the end is near. Try to simply cherish each day without allowing fears of what is to come darken the precious time you have with Brooke...but I know too well from experience that this can be easier said than done. Brooke doesn't worry about tomorrow...as long as her people are happy and love her she will be happy. Hopes for many, many, many happy days/weeks/months to come!!!
Trini

Trini,
You always have the right words during these times! You are a blessing to Sheltie Nation!

I know having said goodbye to Mr Chance at my home and not in a hospital setting was the best thing I ever did. It is not always possible. The company Laps of Love came to the house. The best vet ever that worked with me and Mr Chance for almost a year. No one wants to think about it. It just hurts too much.

I just looked up and I do not have a Laps of Love vet in the peninsula of the bay area, ca.
we do have petlossathome.com and therestfulpaws.cpm (both local only)

Years ago we never had this option. Thank goodness we do now!

Trini

You have EXACTLY stated the situation, Trini. My husband and I said it is "cognitive dissonance" because she appears so spunky and her normal goofy self, if a bit slower. Woke us up this AM at 5 (!!!!!) thinking maybe she could get early breakfast. So it is hard to reconcile that the end is near and we move between laughter and warmth, to tears. All my dogs are special in every way but Brooke was there for me when my father was dying, trying to comfort me and his wife in our sorrow and distress. She and I have a very special bond.

Thank you for this very kind and insightful post, Trini. We are doing our best just to enjoy her.

I totally get this.. Gavin seems so happy and perky sometimes it is hard to reconcile that with his limping so badly.
I know he enjoys his walks in his wheelchair, and I am trying to figure out if taking him every day is more for me than him......
And I know I have neglected my own health and fitness to spend time focusing on his. I need to work on this, but a huge part of me is resisting because at 13 Gavin doesn't have that much longer and I don't want to waste any of his time..

Yes, Cindy... our needs come second, third, and fourth to our heart dogs knowing their time might be limited. I totally understand!

Every morning Gavin wakes me up my prancing on the wood floors near by bedroom door. When I turn on the light and look over, he looks as sweet and alert as he did 10 years ago.
If I encourage him, I get happy belly rub noises from him when I get home. He still runs to the kitchen for his breakfast or dinner when he senses it is time and that is where I am going.

I tiny part of my hopes he will get better and be able to walk without limping at least minimally in the house, even though I KNOW that is 99% not gonna happen.
He will always be my puppy monster.

I remember posting an article a while ago that talked about how nursing a sick pet can result in significant emotional and physical stress and isolation. When Deska got sick I also ended up quite unwell, and he was only extremely sick for a short time, so make sure you look after yourself too.
