California Members...any info on shelties rescued from fire in Riverside??

Yes, the little dogs look dirty and many look frightened...but so would any of our dogs had they just been through the emotional trauma and the soot and water of a fire...and then ended up in a strange shelter. Having had many shelties from mill situations that were in much worse coat condition when they came to me as fosters and who with work groomed out beautifully, I honestly don't see any of these dogs needing to be shaved unless the shelter does so to save time. Hopefully they have good volunteers who can come in and assist in the grooming...but with a bath and a good grooming those little dogs should all look just fine. Wish I didn't live 3,000 miles away, I would love to help.

From what I understand the dogs were in poor condition. They are dirty, matted, super long nails, covered in ticks, etc.

Several local sheltie people/breeders met today at the shelter and groomed 13 of them. They are having to take their own equipment in and the dogs need a lot of work so they are just trying to get them bathed, blown out, nails, and minor trimming. They will be going out again tomorrow and Wednesday to try to get more done. If anyone wants to help I can get you contact info.

From what they posted 29 will go to local rescues (through out CA/AZ/NV), 4 are possibly being returned to owner (don't know if that was who had them or co-owners) and the rest are going up for adoption. Numbers may change but that is what I've seen so far.

One of the people that went today said the public showed up in droves due to publicity and the dogs were frightened/overwhelmed but the shelter is doing the best they can with the situation.
 
Also, Southland Sheltie Rescue is very involved. They are working in cooperation with the shelter. Check out their posts on Facebook. These dogs are being very well taken care of. the rescue will take in any that are deemed unadoptable by the shelter.
 
I'd say there is animal hoarding involved, that many shelties on a suburban block, no kennel license, some sheltie mixes, not toilet trained. Are members being somewhat easy on this person because it has been reported they were a breeder/judge. I think it's appalling for a breeder/judge - I have to question the temperament of the dogs this breeder was selling. Honestly would any of us want to buy a pup from this breeder - they wouldn't come toilet trained, socialised, handled, raised in a home environment (or any environment that would match the average home they go to).

In the end, whether or not it was a puppy farm or a hoarder or a breeder they will still be special needs dogs. I imagine their socialisation, exposure to different sights and sounds and leash walks were limited. We know how skittish and anxious Shelties can be in normal circumstances. But at least they're all wanted (hey a pedigree sheltie for rescue dog prices).

By my count... it looks like 42 were pictured from the link I posted before. Not sure if they are planning to post all 61. It is a big job I am sure. I also wish I lived closer to help.

Thanks in advance to all the rescuers who were able to get these pups out of harms way and an additional thank you to ALL the rescues that will be involved helping them finding new loving homes.:hugs

My hope and prayers are they finally get the one on one care and love they deserve. Sheltie rescues are the only group that understands all their needs and can help them to get properly evaluated and eventually placed in the right homes.

Just one less burden we can help to lift under these circumstances. Especially those of us that live too far away to help directly. Gloria, do you have a complete list you can post of the rescues and the shelter/s who are assisting?

Just feeding this many dogs is going to be a huge cost and I am sure there will be some medical needs too. This is going to be a very heavy financial burden on all the rescues/shelters who have stepped up to the plate and I am sure they would deeply appreciate any financial assistance anyone can give no matter how small or big.

Actually, I was reaching out to see which groups might come forward so we could help. I would assume the rescues in California would be the first to step forward to lend assistance...

I think the initial reports were somewhat confusing, because they stated that all the dogs were in excellent health. I've read elsewhere that the owners are seeking to have four of the dogs returned to them. I might be willing to wager that those four dogs are the owners' particular animals for showing and/or breeding, while the other 57 ... who knows?

Southland Sheltie Rescue is taking a leading role. I don't know if other rescues are involved. They are posting up dates on their Facebook page. There are 52 dogs that the shelter has determined are adoptable. 9 others are still being evaluated. If the shelter determines that any of those are unadoptable the rescue will take them in.
