Casey and his prescription kidney food

Casey is in renal failure. We learned of this the end of May. Doc put him on Royal Canin renal food with modified protein (low protein). Casey ate it. But he didn't like it.

Over the last 4 months, he has lost weight, started randomly barking and then acting like he forgot what he wanted, continued his pacing and panting at an alarming rate.

Took him to see Doc a week ago yesterday. Doc said he thought maybe Casey was nearing the end. He doubled his Fluoxetine (doggie Prozac) and told me to feed him whatever he wanted.

Lord have mercy! WHAT A CHANGE!!!! The doubled dose of meds has calmed him down enormously. MUCH MUCH less panting and pacing!

And now that he's getting his regular food again, the random barking has completely ceased! He was trying to tell me he was hungry but he didn't want to eat that nasty stuff I kept offering him!

I have a whole new dog!

He's doing SO much better. It may be that his kidneys will fail faster. I don't know. But I DO know we have gone from me telling Doc that Casey's quality of life was minimal to me calling Doc and telling him Casey is doing EXTREMELY well now!

Casey is so much happier and he feels better. So no more yucky prescription food for him. He's going to live whatever little time he has left as comfortable and as HAPPY as I can make him.

What a great plan !! Enjoy each day you have with your dear Casey and give him that privilege too.:hugs

So sorry for your furbaby; I lost a 9 month old puppy 2 years ago from acute renal failure--her kidneys never functioned right and she never grew.
I think that quality of life, when we know we can't change the inevitable, is really important, both for Casey now, and you when he is gone--I know it gives me comfort that every dog I have ever had had a good life, even to the end because I never went the drastic measures route--didn't want to prolong a life that was in pain, even from the first German shepherd who was like my child and protector in one. Prayers and hugs across the Sheltie world as you love your Casey for as long as he is here!

Casey

Good on you giving your Casey whatever he wants to eat.
We were told two years ago' almost that William wouldn't last a week
but we too fed him whatever we could get into him, along with his meds. for everything that ailed him.
Keep up the good caring, and you will hopefully be surprised how long he will be with you.

Go and buy Lew Olsons book called "Raw and Natural Nutrition for dogs"

It outlines recipes for kidney dogs, and what foods they can and shouldn't eat. Maybe you can keep him happy without damaging the kidneys.

I just lost a dog to "silent" Pancreatitis, and she recoiled at the prescription foods as well.

Rachael, thanks for the advice!

And thanks to all for the kind words. I just wanted to share what happened and how he went so downhill with the food and how he needed his meds doubled.

With our travel down the Sheltie road, we all have to help each other to keep our babies as healthy and happy as possible.

I love that everyone is willing to share all types of information to that end.

Aw so good that he is happier, you must be over the moon and so relieved. Pups have such good smell he probably knew that yucky stuff was nasty!
Good idea to look into natural foods that will help his kidney's and hopefully make his time longer and more comfortable :)

I have a dog in liver failure. One of the first things the Specialty vet advised was to switch to Science Diet L/D. I cringed at the thought.

Took Landree to my holistic vet, who told me to keep feeding her the Fresh Pet that she loves (10% protein) and avoid Science Diet.

Glad to say that she feels good, eats great and doesn't act sick at all (3 months into her initial 6 month prognosis).

Hugs to you and Casey.
