Casey is in renal failure. We learned of this the end of May. Doc put him on Royal Canin renal food with modified protein (low protein). Casey ate it. But he didn't like it.
Over the last 4 months, he has lost weight, started randomly barking and then acting like he forgot what he wanted, continued his pacing and panting at an alarming rate.
Took him to see Doc a week ago yesterday. Doc said he thought maybe Casey was nearing the end. He doubled his Fluoxetine (doggie Prozac) and told me to feed him whatever he wanted.
Lord have mercy! WHAT A CHANGE!!!! The doubled dose of meds has calmed him down enormously. MUCH MUCH less panting and pacing!
And now that he's getting his regular food again, the random barking has completely ceased! He was trying to tell me he was hungry but he didn't want to eat that nasty stuff I kept offering him!
I have a whole new dog!
He's doing SO much better. It may be that his kidneys will fail faster. I don't know. But I DO know we have gone from me telling Doc that Casey's quality of life was minimal to me calling Doc and telling him Casey is doing EXTREMELY well now!
Casey is so much happier and he feels better. So no more yucky prescription food for him. He's going to live whatever little time he has left as comfortable and as HAPPY as I can make him.
