Chronic tummy problems

You're right, Caro. Those of us who have managed sick dogs who we knew were near the end can certainly relate to your journey. I've had several, and each one was different. The decision as to "when" never gets easier, and you're never certain. All you can do is what you believe is best for your precious pup.

Can you give Deska any human med, like baby aspirin? I know his stomach is sensitive but if he could handle it, perhaps baby aspirin would help some. You can't give ibuprophen or acetomenaphin but we do occasionally use baby aspirin so I know that's safe. Just a thought.

I was told definitely no NSAIDs (not sure why - maybe the liver failure). But I do have endone and targin in various doses, from when I had my treatment and I read dogs can have endone. So I will call the vet in the morn to find out dosage. It's not like they'd need to prescribe anything then, and he's still got the feeding tube in so I can just crush it and wash it down.

Caro, take a look at the website address http://www.pet-loss.net/quality.shtml. You will find some parts difficult to read, but there is a wealth of information that may help you cope with the all the situations you are currently facing. My heart goes out to you, as I, and many others here, fully understand what you are going through.

I feel awful about the no pain meds! I have leftovers from Gavin's radiation treatment and surgeries I would send if I was closer and it wouldn't take weeks!
I understand concerns about abuse, but here they just write shorter scripts :(
And Deska did just have surgery.

I did find this, basically the no NSAIDS is for liver heath, but that is your decision at this point.

It is an intensely personal thing, to time the end of life, "just right", not too soon, not too late. And honestly, it really IS best for a loving, involved owner to decide. Only you know if he gets any pleasure still out of life. I've been thru every scenario, long and slow decline, sudden crash, etc. I still get very emotional thinking about it. I do think it is unconscionable for the vets not to be able to give hospice meds to terminal patients. I'm sorry Caro, more than I can really express. Thinking of you and trying to send you positive energy in your struggle. We all wish we could be there to hold your hand. :hugs

I check for news of Deska every night last thing before I go to bed, and it is the first thing I check every morning.
The time difference means most posts are when I'm asleep.
We all are praying for you Caro and wish you the best through this difficult time.
You really fought for Deska and deserve this time with him.

I am so sorry Caro that Deska has to suffer because of the vets refusal to give him anything!
I would suggest if you know of anyone who smokes Marijuana to see if they could get you some....as I'd posted its very easy to make CBD oil and it does help to relieve the pain.
I hope the vet gives you advice on using your meds on Deska.

Your always in my thoughts and prayers....

Won't do anything illegal, not with my background. However I did convince the specialist vet to give us a couple of nights of codeine, just going to pick it up now. Earlier this year the govt banned codeine over the counter, so even in a mild form it needs a script. Shame I didn't follow the rest of Australia when the ban was introduced and stock up.

Today's news is, he's pretty good. He went for a walk, only lasted a couple of minutes and then back in the stroller. We stopped at Ada's house - don't know why but Deska loooves going to Ada's house. He had a potter around then fell asleep in the lounge. He ate dinner, may have given him too much - when I got home this evening from picking up his tablets there were bits of vomit around the lounge. Really hoping it was too much food rather than the tumour blocking off his intestine so quickly. He also still has diarrhea. But on the whole probably a bit brighter and certainly less wobbly and more awake.

I gave him an ondansetron early today, he was much less restless so I think the pain may be nausea. Gave him another Ondansetron for the vomiting tonight, but I only had 4 (left over from my hospital visits) so need an alternative, they are very expensive.

It's crazy...our vets here dispense meds no problem....my vet, I don't even have to take Piper in she'll give me pills (recurrent injury) but there...crazy you practically have to beg for something!
