Chronic tummy problems

Won't do anything illegal, not with my background. However I did convince the specialist vet to give us a couple of nights of codeine, just going to pick it up now. Earlier this year the govt banned codeine over the counter, so even in a mild form it needs a script. Shame I didn't follow the rest of Australia when the ban was introduced and stock up.
That is and has been the case in the US for decades. I'm glad you got a few codeine pills for Deska

Just got back from the specialist again. Deska was throwing up overnight and then today. The specialist thought it was the gastric tube so he had that taken out. I'm sure he'll feel heaps better now. He just has to keep eating. He's now down to 10kg (22lbs) which is far too skinny for a dog his size. Got him on Royal Canin recovery and some pureed beef as I need to keep his protein intake high. Also just cooked up some pumpkin and potato (pureed) to help with the diarrhea. I think I'll up his food tomorrow and see if that helps. He's still on 4hrly small feeds.

He did manage a little barking today when my support worker left - never thought I'd actually be ecstatic by Deska barking!

It sure helps senior dogs to get more small meals during the day! I know how difficult it can be getting them to eat! I ended up getting an appetite stimulant for Mr Chance! It really did help.

Also, the vets recommended Imodium AD for his loose stool that you can get over the counter. Not sure if you can get it over there.

Glad Deska was strong enough to delight you with his barking!

My vet says 5 cc every 8 hours. Only took one dose last time Zulu as case of the runs.

I'm certain Deska must be feeling much better without that tube...that must've been very very uncomfortable!
You are such a good mom Caro for all that you do for him! It truly warms my heart. Fingers crossed that you can get him to eat and that he stops the vomiting (hopefully having the tube out will make him want to eat more as well).

My vet also said I could use Imodium after Sandstorm had surgery a while ago. The generic name is loperamide. I use it for my IBS, it works very well

I know lots about loperamide. It stops peristalsis so the faecal matter has time to sit in the stomach/colon and more water is drawn out. But as Deska's he has a partial obstruction we want food to keep moving. Deska has actually been on Metoclopramide to increase the emptying of his stomach. So just sticking to pumpkin atm.

Went for a walk with a friend this morning (with his stroller), now he's not doing so well. Slept for hours and now panting and pacing. Don't know whether to try something for nausea or pain. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster. I want it to end then I don't.

Deska was really sick this afternoon, he just lay in the garden vomiting. I gave him a nausea med but then had a physio appointment (carrying him around is mucking my back). When I got back he seemed a little better and wanted to eat so I gave him a little pureed beef. But he's wobbly again and drained.

I don't know what to do. I think he's drinking too much (prob nausea) but that's a problem. If I pick up all the water then how do the cats and Tully drink (it's summer here)? I know how excrutiatingly painful an intestinal obstruction is, I don't want him to go through that but I don't know how to tell when his stomach is blocking off. I don't know if the drinking is causing him to vomit, or if the cancer has grown.

I really want him to hold on a couple more weeks, get through my birthday, christmas and new year - it's only going to be me and the fur kin. I was reading the median survival is 12 days after diagnosis - it's been 15 days so I'm guessing the chances of lasting another 14 days is slim.

Addendum - now he's standing next to me begging for my dinner. I let him lick my bowl clean, after all, why not (altho Tully is wondering why not her).
