Clicker training for a sit stay.

I made two videos that are uploading now, but I didn't have time before I went to work to get them uploaded. I made them when I first woke up. I don't even remember what I said on them. :uhoh:

I better watch them again before I post them. :lol::eek2: I might have said rawr rawr rawr sit Muffy rawr rawr rawr.

FINALLY got the videos uploaded. :dead: It should not take two hours for two videos. They aren't even that long!

These are very bad examples. :uhoh: I was using my old camera, and I was having a hard time holding a camera, kibble, and a clicker. Contrary to what it sounds like, at the end of the video that is NOT the clicker you hear. It is actually my lens cap hitting the side of the camera. This camera does not do a good job of zooming out, and it was hard to get Fluffy's entire body on film.

I was however, half asleep when I made these videos. I almost poked her in the eye with kibble a few times. :lol:

Why was there no leash used? You try holding a camera, kibble, a clicker, and a leash! It ain't easy! While it does appear that in the first video she has it, trust me she does not. She will not sit unless baited to do so.

From watching that Jessica, I think she actually hasn't got it just yet.

Observation 1;
You clicked late when she was already eating the treat - therefore you clicked her for eating the treat nicely. I don't know if you always do this, but you need to click the instant her bum is down.

Observation 2;
I would hold the treat further back over her nose and lure her back quicker, I would not add 'sit' at this point - just click the instant her bum hits.

Observation 3;
I think she needs higher value treats or a really good toy, she was clearly not too bothered with the ones you had and decided to walk off. This is also a sign she was not clear what you wanted.

I'm going to do a demo with Cadbury to explain what I am rabbiting on about, bear with me.:wink2:

Hmm...

1. Your hand should be (in my opinion - ignore me if you completely disagree) palm up when you hold the treat.

This way you can teach the hand signal at the same time.

2. Higher value treats!! Something slimy and smelly usually does it. I used cut up chicken or turkey hotdogs, string cheese (beware of the gaseous effects later), tuna chunks, all kinds of things. You want your pup to be intent on you.

3. Watch Me should be getting harder and harder. If Duncan isn't focusing at agility, I'll take out a treat and hold it to the side. When he ignores it and stares at me, he gets it.

4. Clicking happens the exact moment the action is correct. When her behind sets down on the ground, click and then treat.

5. You are saying Sit too soon. I wouldn't attach Sit with the activity until she is doing it quickly and consistently with the hand signal.

You are doing so much correctly, though! And Fluffy is sooo pretty. Beautiful tri!

I agree with Sophie, you need a higher value treat. she is definitely not interested in those treats. Also like Sophie said, you are not clicking at the right time. Your clicking is way too delayed. You need to "click" the second her butt hits the floor. Then praise and give her the treat. Lastly, I think you might be luring her wrong. I start with the treat a few inches below her nose and then move it up above it high above her head. Bailey will follow the treat and then sit when it gets too high. However, that's how I trained Bailey before I clicker trained her. If you are clicker training her (and I assume you all ready "loaded" the clicker), you don't even have to lure her. Just catch her in the act of sitting, click and treat...but you need better treats than plain ol' kibble.

Aw, Chelle beat me to it with a vid! Here's mine

I agree the treat should be held in the fingers with palm upwards, also moving back over the head and clicking as soon as bum hits floor before rewarding.

Its amazingly hard to lure a dog that knows how to do a sit!:lol: Sit is Cadbury's default action, so it was very hard to make him stand long enough for the lure!

But hear his silly owner getting her words muddled!

PS, the noise in the background is the cat!

Thanks for the tips, everybody! I am about to watch the other videos.

I agree with everything everybody said, except for one thing. I guess everybody skipped over this sentence. :lol:

Contrary to what it sounds like, at the end of the video that is NOT the clicker you hear. It is actually my lens cap hitting the side of the camera.

While I had the clicker in my hand I never actually used it! :winkgrin:

Duncan was so cute in that video! :biggrin2::sadsmile: Sophie, Cadbury reminds me of Smudge in your video. Hahaha. Only there would have been a lot of random spinning! :lol:

I won't have any chicken or cheese until Thursday (that is grocery shopping day!). I actually go to the deli at Wal-Mart once a week and buy a $5 roasted chicken pre cooked. I have it for a meal, and then I take the leftovers and cut them into thin pieces for training. :yes: $5 for a chicken meal AND training treats. You can't beat it!

Wednesday is Smudge's big day. His first time at the park with the other shelties (and the other dogs). It will be interesting to see how he acts to other dogs walking by, and if he barks at everything that moves. We cancelled last week, because everybody was out of town and on vacation.

I'll take everybody suggestions, and in a few days I will post another video as an update.
