Clicker training for a sit stay.

I'm looking forward to the update! You might be surprised about having treats on hand. Most meats work. And with short sessions, you don't need so much of it. I give tiny pieces of any sort of treat, unless I'm working with kibble.

There is some cheese in the fridge, but it isn't mine. Maybe mom will let me "borrow" two sticks until Thursday.

A lady at work gave me another tip the other day. They slice meat in the deli as well, and she said if you catch it right then you can get it pretty cheap. So I might watch the deli and catch some meat on sale and then freeze it and use it as I go along.

Earlier this evening I tried the cheese. Much better. I also did "palms up". It also worked out a lot better. I tried the sit and stand with no words. Worked pretty good! The down - not so much! I am not even worried at all about down at this point though. Just thought I would give it a try. We'll try down at another time.

So my next question is, once I practice it this new way a day or two (without saying the word "sit") how do you eventually go into making her sit without bait?

In obedience class I DID NOT like the way they taught sit, which is another reason I am having a hard time with it. I tried to find a video, but I can't. You'll have to live with my bad explanation.

When the dog is standing you say sit. If the dog does not sit, you:

1. Take the dog by the collar with your left hand
2. Tuck the dog's tail under with your right hand, lift up the dog's rear, and place it into sit position.
3. Tell the dog it's a good boy or good girl.

They say this method is better than pressing down on the hips. I still hate this method though, because it is just too Cesar Millan-ish for me. Terry taught me the bait method, but I have no idea how to transition her to get her to actually sit without being baited.

OK, if it was me, next session I would have bait in my hand, but reward from my other hand. So Fluffy learns that just because you are holding the treat over her nose, doesn't mean she gets that treat.

Next step have no bait in your 'luring' hand but in the other.

I move on pretty quick to avoid the dog becoming fixated on a lure.

Jessica, please re-read that PM I gave you. It has anything I could really add. The treat (or lure) should be hidden when your palm is facing up. So if it isn't there, the pup shouldn't really be able to tell. Then you need to be fast. Click and treat. If she jumps out of the sit, don't give her the treat. She might get frustrated at you (or herself), but she will get it.

And oh, I wouldn't try that method ever! I really don't like physical coercion to get a dog into a position.
