Coat density question

Gloria, our little Ally did not come into her full coat until she was 3. We thought we had a short-ish haired Sheltie, then she suddenly POOFED and had a huge coat. I guess some lines just take longer to get full coat. Don't give up hope yet!

Thanks, Sharon! Wow, I am shocked it took three years! I loved your description... suddenly POOFED... kinda imagined it as a cartoon character from one frame being a short-ish haired Sheltie... then the next frame... POOFED! It made me laugh...

Would love to see the before and after pictures...

That was so long ago and my photos aren't organized but I'll see what I can do. We used to joke that she stuck her paw in the light socket one day and POOF! It really did seem like it was overnight. When she rolled over for a tummy rub, her whole face disappeared! :ROFLMAO:

Finally found what I was looking for. Ally at about 19 months of age, then after she POOFED. :)

Gosh I miss her. She was such a little clown. The first photo of her in the leaves is one of my very favorites.

That is astounding that Ally had such a massive coat change!
It is almost like it is two different dogs! That white ruff is huge!
I can only hope Liam gets the poof gene!

I read somewhere that shelties can take up to three years to get their full coat. Mindy (at 12 mos.) is starting to get a poofy rear end and a poofy mane but has ver little undercoat around her mid section.

Gavin really coated up after 2...and we have always lived here in the bay area where it never gets really cold.
I can brush him out every week for an hour and not make a dent!

My dog Sparkle blowed her coat two weeks ago. It was the first coat blow in her life. It’s interesting she would do this right before winter arrives. Wouldn’t this subject her to being cold in the winter?

I had her spayed several days ago. So her belly and front legs were shaven too. Poor girl, now she looks very scraggly.
