Colon Cancer

Keeping good thoughts and prayers and hugs coming your way!
Rest up now; you can't take care of anyone else if you don't take care of yourself. Time for a TLC day for you. :o

Well now that is good news. I'm sure all of you are exhausted,as it has been a long day. Lets hope tomorrows update gives you a better idea. Will keep all of you in our prayers. Sheltie hugs to Dakota, you & your family~

Dakota just now got done...he is doing fine. They gave him a pain shot (for biopsy) and antiobotics for the cyst. Surgery is not an option. They are going to call us this weekend with the results of the biopsy (cancer stage and how fast growing the cancer is). Then next week the specialist will go over all options with us. I know chemo is an option...and they feel it is important for him to have....but that will be all handled next week. They also are insisting that he gets neutered down the road. We feel that if his time was short that would not be so set on us neutering him...maybe we are just grabbing for some good news.
I am curious to know if a dog can still live a while if surgery is not an option....and the cancer has not spread and is not in the bloodstream??
I will keep everyone updated this weekend. Thanks for the prayers and all I can ask is you keep praying.

Janet- Thanks for the advice...I am really mentally exhausted and have made myself physically sick by worrying...True has been a wonderful comfort to all of us. I took her to see Dakota a couple times and she loves chasing him...and he is playing with her as well. Thanks for you and your familys support and prayers!!

?? Maybe they feel that the hormones would progress the cancer's growth rate?
Otherwise I'm not sure why they'd push for neutering.

Some tumors stay put (i.e. do not metastasize) and only become a problem once they overgrow too many boundaries. So the tumor may wrap around a nerve or blood vessel; making it too dangerous to remove...but if treatments keep it small then you have a greater lifespan. So reducing hormones that might affect growth and/or chemotherapy that inhibits rapid cell growth would keep it controlled; even though it could not be removed.

I'm just speculating here; but it is relatively educated speculation

Perhaps the vet feels that chemo therapy would keep Dakota stable, as it has Ivy. I doubt they would recommend neutering if his time was that short, Becky. But I know what you mean about grasping at hope. Still, it does sound like there could be something positive in the report. Keep the faith and we'll keep up the prayers.

As Janet said, take care of you too. Dakota and True will feel it if you are stressed. Impossible not to be, I know, but try to get some down time for you.

Sending hugs!

If dog cancer is similar to humans then the vet may feel the cancer could progress to the prostate, esp if is already has a cyst there, due to the hormones prostates are at a higher risk for cells mutating - which may be why he is suggesting neutering.

There are a couple of websites about canine cancer with heaps of links that I recently heard about.
