Dog Wheelchair

OK..so we just got back from big Sur where Gavin got to camp, get carted around, and carried up and down stairs to the beaches. And he is the one who is tired!
You are one devoted Sheltie mom! What a grand time you guys had! Nothing like sea air to lift your spirits!

Love, love, love the pictures! Give Gavin a pat for me!

How is Gavin doing on the brace now? I always wondered if it might restrict movement to sit. You just confirmed it. As far as stability goes... if it helps him walk, even with a limp, he is certainly building stamina. Gavin is one lucky dog! Only the best for him! You will leave no stone unturned to make sure Gavin has all the love and support he needs! Physical and mentally! Hugs and kisses to you both!

He has more of a problem sitting down then getting up. Since the leg only bends within an permitted range, his leg sticks out when sitting which it didn't before (the leg sticking out is indicative of a torn CCL, btw). He did just make it up his ramp with the brace on (as I was typing!).

Everything I have read says that walking with the brace does not really build muscle, but stabilize while scar tissue forms around the knee. When he actually walks (as opposed to hopping) with the brace it looks identical to without the brace. Same amount of limping. So if it doesn't help and is more awkward, I am leaning towards to returning it. I have 2 more weeks before my return deadline to decide. There is supposed to be a window in the rain, and I will try and walk him with the brace for a few minutes.

we just walked next door with the brace on (with booties for traction). Some old guy immediately tells me my dog is limping in an accusatory voice (duh! I am not an idiot). It went OK. I will try a once a day to see if there is any change.

So I was sick this past week (and it rained a lot) and Gavin did not get a walk in his wheelchair for 5 days..Literally 120 hours.. I noticed his limp getting more pronounced during those 5 days.

Today we went to the local park with lots of dogs. we went for a pretty long (and muddy) walk, but Gavin definitely needed more 'help' going uphill. By that I mean I lightly tug his leash (clipped on the back of his harness) to help him. of course, as soon as he sees a dog he starts moving faster! All about the motivation.

I m so sorry to hear you were sick Cindy. I know Gavin loves his walks but you need a break too especially since you are under the weather!

Glad you were able to get out a bit. I understand Gavin need a little help... gezzz, I feel so damn out of shape since this winter has been so cold and icy.
We all need a little push from time to time!

Take care...

it makes me feel that he needs more walks, like everyday.
I really didn't think he was improving much from the wheelchair walks, but I definitely noticed him getting worse when he wasn't so I guess it makes a big difference.

edit: Gavin has literally been sleeping ALL day after we got back except for a quick pee and dinner break. Not sure if I should be worried....

So this morning took advantage of no rain and earlier daylight for 30 minute walk. Gavin did OK, and even gave me a tail wag when we got back home. course that could just be him expecting breakfast...

He has been even cuddlier than the (new) normal recently...he will sit on the couch and gradually move closer and closer to me. But recently he has been right next to me and close enough to put his head on my leg.

It is pretty new for Gavin to do that. It is funny that he will start off far away, then move closer, then closer, then right next to me.

I think we will start with walks everyday now...at least 30 minutes every night. and try for additional 1 hour walks 3-4 times a week.
Like when he was younger and we didn't have a yard.

Its so nice when they cuddle, you really feel the love they have for you!
Just today (first time ever) Finnie jumped from the floor into my lap! Had I been expecting it I'd of caught him lol (I was sitting in a kitchen chair)...called him back and he jumped straight up into my lap.
Quite surprising because he hates to be picked up but on his terms I guess it's ok lol.
I have to get back out and start walking my guys! Now that the weather has improved I have no excuses...just have to get over this cold!
