Fat Sheltie Butts!

Ok, so if I get this right, you threw a towel over your dog when you - bare butt naked  - put him outside, then you repeated the process with the second... THEN you got dressed, and had a glass of wine? Just getting the visual. Sounds like quite the show. :biggrin2:

Just to be clear.....I did throw on a bathing suit after I threw the towel on and before I brought dog #1 outside. I figured that my 80 year old neighbours couldnt survive the view! :eek2:

Well, here is the update!

Damn fur will not freakin' blow! I was sure the bath would do it. But Indy's butt is as big as before and no tell-tale tufts sticking out, so I guess its back to the rake and grind away at it.

He will be so happy about that, I'm sure! I know I'm not!

Just curious, but what are you expecting to happen when they blow their coat?

When Bailey blows her coat I don't find any more fur on my floors than I normally do. I mainly find little hair balls in corners and under furniture whether she is shedding her under coat or not. Nothing crazy.

When she is shedding or blowing her winter undercoat, I just find a lot more fur in the comb when I brush her. Her fur doesn't really shed on it's own, I have to brush it out.

Also, when she is blowing her coat, no matter how many gigantic piles of fur I have, she is still just as fluffy and fuzzy as before.

Like you said, normally, my dogs don't "blow", but in the last couple of years, Indy's undercoat will "loosen" so that I can almost pull it out my hand (i.e. in little clumps). When I see these white clumps coming up, I know he's ready for the real, meal, deal. And then grooming is a piece of cake. It just comes out easy. This weekend, nothing was coming out easy, but he still had huge undercoat.

So that's when I decided to give him a bath and hope that it would loosen things up. Not so much and still thick undercoat.

On to plan B....whatever that is....?

Tinsel is currently blowing his coat. I have been expecting it since he was neutered in December. We had a spa day on Saturday and after the bath he looked like he had half the coat then he did when he went in. The first time we went to Meaghan's a tri was there getting bathed. Meaghan dries the dogs in the bathtub. In all my years in dogs I have never seen hair fly like the stuff coming off that bitch. I peeked around the corner and suggest that Meaghan use a mask - it was like a blizzard of undercoat. At times you really couldn't see Meaghan through the glass partition for all the black coat raining down. Amazing!
Doug Gaudin, a judge here in Canada, ran a boarding and grooming establishment. Whenever he had a dog like an Old English to bathe he would don a rain suit and rubber boots and take the dog into the shower stall he had in his grooming salon.
I have decided that all bathing of Tin will be done by a pro. After bathing multiple westies a minimum of every three weeks for that past 30 odd years, I figure someone else can do my sheltie. The terv hasn't had or needed a bath since she was less than a year old and she is nearly 11 now. She has absolutely no dog smell and shines like a new penny. Besides, every once in awhile I still have to wash the horses - that's enough for me.

When drying mine that are blowing coat I do it outside!! Otherwise it takes me a day and a half to clean the kennel room. I've also found using the air force dryer helps pull(blow) the undercoat out of the dogs. And besides the birds love me afterwards as there is fur blowing in the yard!!

It usually takes about 4 hours out of my day to do the 2 dogs

Try it with four! :ick I tend to so things in shifts: one evening I'll do feet and nails. Another evening I'll brush out. Then I'll bathe. Final brushing is a day after bath -- it keeps me from losing my mind!

Oh I know! I meant 4 hours just bathing and brushing and drying..you'd think I show mine but no...I just like them to look like I do...no crimping behind the ears in this house lol. Nails, teeth brushing, trimming fur..that's all separate. I spend 45 minutes per day per dog just brushing. I trim nails every 5 days, and teeth every other day. It's s full time job!

Bingo! I'm a super idiot! I have 3 high powered dryers at my store just begging to be used (waiting for a groomer to be hired soon I hope). In the meantime these dryers are idle.......

Look out boys! Mama's coming with the real thing!

Sing along with me (sung to the tune of "I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair")

-- I'm gonna blow that fur right out of your butt...and send its on its way! --
