Gavin's Never Ending Dotage (Part 2)

Cindy I assume you are going home on Interstate 5 but if you end up on the coast for any reason we can be a rest stop. Just PM me. Be glad you aren't in the Bay Area right now - over TEN inches of rain expected tomorrow and Tuesday with this latest storm. We've got about 3 - 5 coming down here, they say. :eek2:

wondering if poor guy has been gradually getting dehydrated. I have been more conscious of giving him water throughout the day, and added a water bowl on my bedroom where he sleeps. At home he normally drinks at night, and he did last night. Right now he can't quite make it into the kitchen to eat and drink so I kinda need to meet him halfway or carry him in there. he did eat this morning as well as drink, so I'm happy. He is doing better with walking and peeing, but needs help getting up sometimes depending on how he is laying down. today we will go for a stroller walk (its frosty this morning).

Gavin is a sweetheart, drinking water for me even when he doesn't want to. I cup my hand in his water bowl and he'll lick water from my hands. If I remove my hand, he'll stop drinking. He was outside most of the day and hopped around a bit. Not as much as 2 weeks ago, but a decent amount. I brought water out to him a few times, and he did drink for me. The backyard is big enough that he isn't close to the outside water bowl when he is doing his thing. If he keeps improving like this I think he'll be back to normal pretty soon. definitely need to keep the water bowl in the bedroom for night time drinking.

I imagine it’s very easy for a senior dog to become dehydrated just as it is for a senior person. The similarities between people and dogs are quite amazing so I have no doubt this would be any different.
I wonder if a ‘pinch test’ of their skin would show they’re dehydrated like it does for us? You’d probably have to find an area of skin without much fur and give a light pinch…if the skin goes back quickly they’re good but if it takes longer then they’re dehydrated.
Gavin is such a sweet boy and you are such an amazing dog mom Cindy for all you do for him!

Yes, (says the former vet tech :biggrin2: ) you pull up on the scruff of their neck. It should snap back down, if it sags slowly, they are dehydrated.

Gavin and are leaving mom's tomorrow. I am exhausted from everything....Since Gavin can't be in the kitchen (the pool noodle idea didn't work..I will need to bubble wrap next time we are here), he is babygated out. Since that is where he was set up to eat/drink (again, he is very messy), I have been feeding and watering him intentionally in the living room 4-6 times a day (I set him up on a towel, then clean up when he is done). 4 days of driving.....hoping to avoid snow in flagstaff and albuquerque (the mountains along 40).

Take your time, and have a safe trip home.
