Goodbye Trace - my sunshine

Dumb question...but any ideas of how long it will be before the "on the verge of tears" goes away?

The last dog we had to send to the bridge was a 14 1/2 year old malamute/shepherd mix...it was sad, but expected. I cried quite a bit, but was also relieved that she was no longer in any pain, and I knew we had made the right decision.

Trace was only 4 1/2 - way too soon to say goodbye.

We have been doing so good - still missing Trace, but also excited about a possible new puppy being born soon. And I know some will think I'm crazy, but before we delivered Trace's body to the vet for cremation that last, awful morning, I removed his collar (with tags) and also picked up a small "Trace furball" from his crate. I have those in the pocket of my sweatshirt jacket that I wear every night when it cools down.

I don't ever want to forget my special little boy Trace - that will NEVER happen. But I'm hoping that someday I can remember him with smiles instead of tears.

And you will remember him with bitter sweet smiles, it just takes a while. When I lost Seamus to liver disease it hit us out of the blue also one day he was healthy and the next he was in liver failure. Quite a lot of shelties are prone to liver issues I have sadly learned.

After a while the flooding tears will give way to a fuller heart.

Hugs,
Kate

For me, "the verge of tears" is a constant companion. I lost my Randy Jan 16, 2013 and I still sometimes cannot say his name with tearing up. My babies that have been gone much longer can still reduce me to tears, but losing Randy ripped my heart right out. Hope you can get your new baby next month. My baby boy Casey just turned one year old Friday. He has filled my heart with love again, but the tears still come and go. I found this poem somewhere on the web. I love it.

"there is a sacrednedd in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are messengers of overwhelming grief.....and unspeakable love." Washington Irving.

I love the 'Unspeakable love" line.

I love the poem - thank you for sharing.

I keep a photo of Toby & Trace at my desk, in a frame that says "the boys" - that's what we always called them. It's still hard to only fill one dog dish at meal times, only grab one leash when it's time for a walk.

The breeder I'm working with is hoping for one litter at her home & then another, a week later from the same sire at a friend's home. We should know in about a week if there will be puppies. IF there's a little boy for me I will be beyond excited.

So many beautiful memories. I especially loved the last picture...Trace had the wisdom of the ages in those eyes. What a precious soul...I know you miss him more than any words can ever say.
