I know, its fascinating. I once watched an episode of the Simpsons and they were talking about 'fanny packs' what we would call bum bags. It made me stop for a second because 'fanny' over here is a slang term for female genitalia

Sca just walked. I had to carry him some when he got tired and by the German Shepherd he used to afraid of but he did good walking. Of course carrying that moose now would be a workout.

I'm with you on the Fanny thing - way too rude, esp where the bags are positioned it could truly be a fanny bag. But then I could never work out why you would want to call your daughter Fanny then.

My favourite misunderstanding happened at my brother's work (DIY shop). He was helping two American customers when quite clearly over his work radio someone said;
"Nick, I'm going on a fag break."
My brother just replied 'ok'. Then he saw the shocked look on these customers faces.
"Its alright," He said, "He means he is going on a cigarette break."
Fag being slang for cigarettes over here!

This thread is funny. Some of the words I have heard my Dad use - being raised by an English mom he picked them up.
You are correct when you refer to a rucksack as a backpack. I have heard them referred to either/or here in Canada. Must be the common British heritage thing or something.
You can sometimes find backpacks with a smaller outer pocket that the puppy would fit into.
Melissa, Dad used to carry Noah around under his jacket or sit him on the hood of the car when we first got him. He just wanted to show him off. Or he stands outside the store or near the car with the pups on their leash, just to get the comments. He (pardon the pun) laps it up.

I must watch too much BBC America because I have no problems with the British terminology for things. But then, I've been watching British comedy on PBS off and on since I was in my teens. (I'm also the person who, while visiting Toronto, had to purchase EVERY Harry Potter book a second time because THOSE editions were in the Queen's English instead of American English.)
