Then I go...crap...puppy shots/vet/worming are at least 200, gotta send food and toys with them, all of mama and daddy's health testing had to come from somewhere...crap, mama needed x-rays and other pre-puppy testing...crap...puppies need formula and goats milk...oh, and all of the show fees. crap...needed new scissors and brushes...there's another 100. oh, needed another crate...theres another 50...

Well, I was going to make over 2000. (Saying 6 puppies at 400 each)...now I'm in the hole over 5000. How the heck did that happen? :biggrin2:

Yeah, to the average person, it looks like you're going to make a bunch of money. When you add everything up, you're in the hole much, much farther than you'll ever be able to get out. Unless you produce a "Phantom" that you can sell for 100,000. :uhoh:
 
That's something I always have trouble explaining to my non-doggy friends.
"You sold those puppies for how much?!?! You must be rich!!! Why are you driving that old POS when you can afford better?!?!" on and on...
Half of them *still* don't get it when I explain what all costs are involved, and that breaking even every time is a fantasy of mine. I think the only one who got it is a male friend of mine who has his own business. His reaction at first was the same, but then he thought about it for a minute, and asked me what my actual profit was after expenses.

I don't think all BYBs have bad intentions. Some just say "oh my dog is cute and the neighbor's dog is cute. Let's mate them." I think some do it for the money and some do it because it seems like a fun idea. I personally wouldn't buy from a BYB because you don't know the dog's background, but at least BYBs aren't usually inhumane to their dogs.

I prefer a breeder, who breeds show dogs and then sells the ones that aren't show quality to pet homes.

This is what I don't understand about BYB and puppy millers. What went wrong with them? What made them decide one day that it would be a good idea? What makes some people stick their pretty shelties (or other breed) in a cage outside in extreme weather conditions?

I just don't get some people. :no:

IMO that would be a puppy mill. Not a BYB. I think everyone has their own definition of a puppy mill and BYB. To me a puppy mill is a place where there's a ton of dogs, they're treated inhumanely. Kept in small cages and are just breeding machines. Obviously, they do this just for the money. I don't know how someone could be that heartless.

A BYB is someone who just decides to breed their dog. Their dog is treated like their pet. They don't know the dog's background and most likely doesn't have much experience in breeding. Their dogs are not show quality.
 
I think for some of these BYBs it is a way to make money that is under the table. Maybe they have a medical disablity that allows them not to work, but they need, or want more money. That is what we see here. Because it is time consuming to care for a number of dogs, it works for people who stay at home. In our area of New England, I would say, we have squeezed most of them out, with good education and quality breeders to pick from. We have 6 AKC recognized sheltie clubs, so it is easy to find a breeder with pups in your price range. I know the gals in Maine get less for their pups then we do in CT., but we are all available to help....the family that is looking for a puppy. If someone can't afford one of my dogs, I refer them to someone in another area of New England that can work with them. Our network for New England is awesome.

I know the difference. :smile2: I've seen up close what a puppy mill looks like and how it operates. Not proud of that fact, but I can't change the past (and I'd never trade him for a million dollars :yes:). Puppy mills, in some ways, are more sneakier. They work on a larger scale.

I think I saw something similar on Animal Cops. Only this woman was in a wheel chair, and her dogs had a (scarcoptic) mange outbreak. They seized about 14 dogs and a number of cats as well! She was hiding some of the dogs in her washing room so the animal control people wouldn't take some of them!
