MDR1 and Demodex Treatments

Well, first of all I completely understand that I am a nobody who doesn't know much at all about medicial stuff, and I know even less about dog health issues. I understand there are a LOT of breeds out there with a LOT of problems that may or may not be related to just their breed. I am sure it is a lot for vets to keep up with.

On the other hand though, as stated above, I am a simpleton who knows at least enough about it to know that my dogs needs to be tested. :uhoh: I have not been to medical school. MDR1 is also not something that is only sheltie related. Several breeds can get it. So I don't really think it is unreasonable for a vet to know something about it. If you know that shelties should not have ivermectin for red mange SURELY you know something about MDR1 to have even said that in the first place?!


On a different note, for those shelties and other dogs with MDR1 I stumbled across this cool site! They make MDR1 tags for your dog's collar so in case it gets lost people will know that a lot of drugs are toxic to your dog!

When I go to do Fluffy's test I will do it on my own. I had to have somebody help with Smudge some though. He gets very aggitated when people mess with his pants and his face. He snarled at me a few times, but I got the job done.

This was the only other vaccine I was considering for the reasons you stated above.

The one year rabies shot does annoy me. I myself find it a gimmick to get people back into the vet's office so they can pump more vaccines $$$$$ into your dog.

I really do like this vet and the vet's office, but I wish today would have went different. :dead:

By the way, I ran out to the mail earlier and made it to the mailbox just before the mail lady came and got the mail. :biggrin2: So my test kit is on it's way!
 
I would ask the next time you go to the vet why he doesn't do the three-year rabies, Jessica, or IF he does and if not, why not. Sometimes I've found you just have to ask. And if they know you're looking for that, maybe they'll do it. My vet only does 3-year but I know many (like my old vet) that would only do the one-year which was a complete rip off to get you in for a fee. He did that with all vaccines, it was like a shot factory. So not good for our dogs!

They don't say anything about treatment though. Again though, not a bad vet, except for the MDR1 thing and the vaccine pushing. This vet actually did a much better job of talking to me about Smudge's mange treatments (there were not many!) than my old vet was.

Fluffy had her puppy shots there, but Smudge got all of his shots at my old vet so I did not kow how they were about pushing vaccines.

Nope. All they know is "white feet, don't treat". When I took the list of drugs to my vet, she was not aware of all the drugs, and was appreciative of the list.

White feet don't treat, but German Shepards also can have MDR1, and they don't have white feet. :uhoh:

That list of drugs is awful. It would be headache to have to study and remember all of it! What I was trying to say though is that if the saying goes "white feet don't treat" should you not approach with caution? Especially if the dog already has hereditary problems? Not likely that a sheltie would have MDR1 and demodex, but it is possible.

That's a good question! I wonder if it is genetic. I don't remember any of the websites saying. Not like Smudge's breeder would answer me anyway. :rolleyes2:

Really, Jessica, shop around for vets and don't be afraid to stick up for your pup at the risk of looks that mean you are stupid. It has taken me a bit, but I'm a momma bear when it comes to my pups. If only I could be that way for me, too...

Any white on the feet? Duncan AND Abbie have white on their toes... eh. I should test them.

They showed Where the Red Fern Grows when I was in 8th grade once. I read a book instead of watching like I should have so I don't know what the movie is about. Enlighten me? :lol:

I will see what the test results of this test is before I do any moving. I just really, really hate to. Their staff is so nice! :( On the other hand though I don't want to pump my dogs full of vaccines every year - especially Smudge. There's not a lot of options here. Maybe when they finish building the new interstate through Texarkana it will bring more business into the area, and cause new places for pets and pet care to pop up.
