So glad you all agree that Our Buddy Rob Roy is truly a Sheltie!! It isn't fair to compare him to Maggie Mae who was a show puppy. She actually turned out to be too small and was sold to a man who neglected her and we were the lucky ones who rescued her!! That's when we fell in love with Shelties!!

Looks like he's going through those gawky teenage years. He looks like he will be on the bigger size, so he should grow into his ears. He can take up to two years to get a full coat.
And when they make comments about his appearance, train him to go up and heal them! That will show them he's a Sheltie.

There are two other pictures of him at that location. We love him so much but I may just tell people he's a mix even though he is supposed to be a full Sheltie. I wish I could say we were naive - but we know better than to buy puppies from backyard breeders, pet stores, etc. Somehow we thought we could see the puppies and walk away without one!The breeder didn't do any of the dewclaws and the ones on the back look really strange. Our vet said it would require surgery now and be awfully painful so we aren't going to do it.
Thanks for all the responses. Shelties are such wonderful little dogs. Our Maggie Mae has been a joy for the last 7 years. She is pretty as a picture!
I just have to pop in and say that she's gorgeous, and looks all sheltie to me! ;-).. I would not call her a mix by any means ;-).. Maybe if her ears were tipped, she'd look more like what you think she should? I happen to love her ears just the way they are though..

Definately all sheltie! Don't wish a fuller coat tho, Deska started out with hardly any coat and now he looks like a cotton fluff ball - all coat! So the early months are definately not a good indication for coat length.
In Australia we don't remove dew claws at all (unless they get damaged), so I wouldnt worry about them. Although it is unusual to have rear dew claws - dont know any dogs that have them so I couldn't say whether they are better removed. Has he already been desexed - because its an option to get it done then.
And don't worry about the ears either - Deska had big prick ears as a pup and they are now like hound dog ears!

Thank you so much for all your info! Buddy has been neutered but the vet didn't want to remove the dewclaws because he said he's old enough that it would be real surgery and very painful - like getting a finger removed! Yuck! So he has dewclaws on all four paws and we hope he doesn't injure one. The rear ones look quite weird - like little toes!

My little FoxMan cane frim a BYB ouooymiull. His eears were HUGE so much the "resurers" called him Fox since he had ears like a fox. He was 7 months old when turned over to me. His coat now at almost 3 years old is rather fine and nothing like my other 9 dogs coats. His legs are so thin and he sits really funny because of bone issues. Here is a pic of my FoxMan who I love to death. His ears now look normal size

Awwww - he's so cute! They certainly come in different sizes and shapes - but they are all so special!! Foxes ears look perfectly normal now! Buddy does look like a Coyote at this point in his life but we love him so much!!!
He looks fine! You must have gotten lucky the first time getting a sheltie that didn't go through an awkward phase!
Ignore the comments. Sheltie people can be real snobs around other sheltie owners. People were always telling me Aztec was way too big. As if I couldn't tell.
