One sick dog.....Bacca, my boy!

skin funk

Barb, I had a sheltie who had a hot mess of a coat and went through several vets to deal with the problem. I have found that some specialized derms will give you no better advice or treatment than your own vet.

Is it possible that Bacca has anemia? I know that you have had a zillion and one tests run, but was anemia one of them?

Just putting it out there as you try to unravel this mystery.

Hugs,
Kate

That's a new one But truly because is cantered in his trunk I think it's still his hypo even his counts are stable.

The only thing stopping from spending the next hundreds of dollars is that Bacca doesn't seem to bothered by it. He only itches occasionally. Though he looks awfull. Like he has poodle cut. :eek2:

Some pets are very stoic. It's a natural defense mechanism to not show distress or pain. Even though he may not act like anything is bothering him, him may very well be in pain. And shelties are known for hiding their pain.

My coworker's cat had to get 7 inches of her bowel removed because it was dead from blockage. Besides vomiting and not pooping, she acted perfectly normal. She was playful, eating & drinking. Before he took her to the vet, she started to reject her food. The vet couldn't believe that she was still functioning like her normal self despite the severe damage to her intestines and bowel obstruction.

It has been my experience that what is appearing outside on our shelties is being caused by what is inside and so I agree with Take4roll10 and her advice. I have had sick shelties before who were stoic and didn't show their illness at all. Just this past summer Harper Lee broke a tooth and must have been in considerable pain but you would never know it at all. We caught it at her routine dental check. She never missed a meal.

Follow your gut Barb.

Hugs and much support,

Kate

Skin Funk is back with a vengeance!

Still waiting to hear from the other vet's assessment of his results.

In the meantime, his skin funk is back. He was starting to improve but just last week it slid back into ugly again. It is centered on his trunk, shoulders and backside. Oily scabs, undercoat just falls out.

I bath him weekly with medicated vet shampoo. Today it was so bad that he was whimpering through the bath. I felt so bad for him I could barely even get through coming out the gunk. I ended up cutting out a 3 x 3 inch patch of his fur instead. The picture attached is the end results.

Any ideas?

Barb, I'm so sorry this is still on going with no results. I wish I had a suggestion for you.

I would contact the new vet and give them an update on the skin funk and Bacca's discomfort while bathing him.

I'm working on a new vet. Sent all of his history a couple of weeks ago but I haven't heard back. It's my breeders vet so she is going to contact him too. His last blood work only a few months ago was good on the hypo so I can't imagine why this is persisting.

The medicated baths were working but not so much now. And he won't let me brush him after.

I absolutely have to comb him out tonight even if it hurts him. He is getting huge mats which will only get worse. Sorry Bacca! I gotta do it!

I picked up Vetericyn Wound and Infection Care at my store today. It seems to have pretty good reviews. Not cheap! But maybe it will make a difference.

We use Vetericyn at our practice for incision care and it works well for that...not sure how it will work for Baca's skin issues. Is his skin inflamed, infected ?

It is red and flaking. As it flakes, it scabs a little. And gets caught into his fur. I can't even brush him right now, and his matts are so bad. So I'm hoping the Vetericyn will alleviate the pain a little so that can brush him out.
