One sick dog.....Bacca, my boy!

Have you considered shaving him (along with whatever treatments/medications you use)? Seren's skin issues didn't completely clear up until I shaved her right down. It took about 7 months for her hair to grow all the way back, but she heeled much faster, and because she had so little fur I was able to see how far the issues extended and when her skin was better/worse. I held off doing it for a long time, but I once I did it made both of our lives easier. She was much more comfortable, and I had a clear view of her skin.

I still think Bacca's skin and coat condition are from a liver/gallbladder disease and won't get better until that is addressed...might be a way to manage it until then, but I don't think it will resolve until then. I hope you get a definate diagnosis from you new vet very soon and can get Bacca back to feeling great . It has to be very frustrating waiting and wondering what to do.:hugs

Funny you mention it. I have been considering doing exactly that. Not on all over shave but at least the infected areas. I thought I would use the bikini shaver which is very gentle. My only concern is that with summer coming I'm concerned about sunburn.

I was worried about the same thing, so I picked up one of the summer coats the reflects the sun, and had her wear it all of the time when she was outside. It worked really great - no sunburn at all, and it kept her nice and cool.

Mellie,

It's either the liver, or the gall stones or the hypothyroid for sure. The extreme vets in my city want me to spend $5000-$6000 in surgery (without proper diagnosis), period. They are not interested in talking about other remedies. I don't have that kind of money, frankly. It totally breaks my heart that I may have to decide about Bacca based on finances. I've never been in that position before. I'm tearing myself apart here.

And this is why I'm trying to get another opinion. No luck. btw. I tried Dr. Dodds. Nothing useful. Just more bafflegab.

I tried to brush him today to get rid of the matts. No luck. I had to ruthlessly cut them out with no finesse. He looks like a patch work quilt right now. I couldn't even do his nails today - he was screaming by the time I was done just with his fur.

:cry::cry::cry:

Ok, finally heard back from my breeders vet. He goes in next Wednesday. I'm not optimistic though. I think for sure I'm looking at some kind of surgery whether gall bladder, liver shunt or both. Then what to do. I'm not looking forward to making this call.

And in the meantime, his skin is SO bad.....I keep treating it with Vetericyn and medicated baths. Right now he has a band a raw skin those goes from one armpit over the back to the other. In some places, weeping.

As I am right now. Poor boy!

Could the medicated baths and/or vetericyn be making it worse? I feel SO bad for him :-(.

I feel horrible for both of you. Praying that the vet will be able to give you some sort of good news. Callie sends get-well barks too.
