Our Little Dante...injury :(

Randi, Cass and Jomuir....thanks for the continued good thoughts for little Dante.

This afternoon he barked for the first time since this whole medical issue erupted...he is normally one of my most talented barkers (beats our shelties at producing noise!), but he had been totally silent except for pain cries for the past 4 days. Never thought I would actually celebrate his barking!!!!

Yayyyyy!!! I know the feeling of being so happy to see your dog acting normal. Even if that normal thing is something you usually discourage. :wink2: Bark away Dante!

Really hoping little Dante is better, Trini. Glad to hear he was able to do a little barking. Fingers all crossed for his continued improvement and a swift return to barking his little head off!

Well, today has not been the greatest. Our vet had warned me that healing would not be fast and to expect there would be continued pain.
Yesterday little Dante seemed so much improved that I got my hopes up that we might have turned a corner on the worst of the pain.

I know that even when the jaw bone is back into the socket, either naturally or by surgery, the surrounding tissue will have taken a beating and need more time to heal.

So, one day at a time for my little black bear. We have wonderful medical support for him and I have full confidence that we will get through this and he will be a happy lad once again...but it is just so heartbreaking to hear when he yelps in pain.

Thanks again so much to all for the continued concern and good wishes.

Sca, although I do take very loving care of my brother, Dante, to share my portion of food would push me into the realm of martyrdom. After all I am a sheltie and shelties live for FOOD...and I know that Dante would never want to see me suffer. So, I don't think I had better offer to share.

You could bring him some of his and well since he is not eating well eat the rest, to avoid spoilage of course.

Hope your buddy is improving still.

PS Does he do flyball my buddy Zip does and he is fast. But I cannot run after him according to my sheep as I like to chase him.

LOL Sca, very creative plan for "stealing" food, I must say! But I am impressed with your stated concern about spoilage...very commendable.

No flyball for our little black bear. He has a bad spine, two bad hips (one dislocated and leg bone held in place via muscle sling), and mild luxating patella issues...ie he is basically a total physical wreck! But he makes up for it in sweetness. And he does excel at the "sport" of barking!

Trini, I continue to keep your little Dante in my thoughts and prayers. I know progress is much slower than you would like as it is just so hard for us to watch our babies in pain. With all the medical you have working for your little bear, let's hope that he is as comfortable as possible and continue praying for a full and speedy recovery. Rest easy little Dante and let the healing continue. :smile2: :fl :hugs

Just checking in on our little patient...

How is our little Dante this morning?

Inquiring minds want to know...

:smile2: I just told Dante that he has a guardian angel on SN, who goes by the sign in "ghggp", watching out for him.

Today was supposed to be follow-up X-rays on the jaw but that has been put off until next week. Wednesday evening we had to go back into the vet's due to pain. He was given another pain shot on top of the Tramadol he is on and was also started on preds to try to get the inflammation down...Metacam was stopped with the addition of the preds. The pain shot has helped a lot but will wear off today...hopefully some progress will have been made with the preds and he won't return to that high level of pain again. Our vet is starting to suspect that some of the pain may be due to the degenerative disc disease in his neck (discs 5,6,7 are not looking at all good on X-rays)...so we may be headed to a specialist to have an MRI done on his neck. That will be decided next week if the jaw has reset naturally and Dante is still in serious pain.

All the meds keep him just sedated enough that he is not upset with being confined to an x-pen both inside and outside...so keeping him quiet and keeping him safe from any bumping by the others has thankfully been very easy.

Thanks for caring about our little lad.

Thank-you. :smile2: He definitely needs those prayers...it is a rough time for our little one.

It's great to hear that Dante is better now!! :smile2:

Maybe if he is a rescued dog he could have something wrong in his neck from a previous injury, but I'm sure you'll take the better care of him and he would be well in the future :hugs
