Poop Size?

As Michele said, I think it's more about fiber. When I was feeding the dogs Nutrisca (30% protein, 7% fiber), they were pooping a lot and it was big. Miko was going 3-4x a day and that's very unusual for him. Now that I'm on TOTW (25% protein, 4%? fiber), the outcome is a lot smaller and less (once a day maybe twice). When my dogs were on EVO/Orijen (~40% protein, ~3% fiber) it was even less.

I'm thinking it's the fiber content and also what's in the food. I mean, even 1% in fiber content, I can see a difference. But then again, even the color of the poop is different between dogs. Obviously they digest things differently. Don't we all? Heck, even as humans, don't we all have different "schedules"?

I admit, this topic is interesting.

I wouldn't be surprised if fiber plays a big role in poop size. When Bailey was eating california natural (2% fiber), her stool was very small. The circumference was only the size of a pencil and she had 1-2 bowel movements a day. Now she is eating TOTW (4% fiber), her poop has definitely doubled in size and she goes 2-3 times a day.

Since Yogi has been eating a higher fibre diet, his have increased in diameter quite noticably. Revel is always consistent cigar shaped and slightly thicker than thumb thickness. I make a point of observing what each dog produces. Yogi because he is 'not right' and Revel because one of the indicators of an enlarged/inflamed prostate which is common and he has suffered from in the past is small flat/worm like poos.

Watching the poo each day keeps the vet well away is my theory!

But is big poop a good thing or a bad thing? My pups' poops are solid but large.

They are on Now! which is about 24% protein but a grain free diet. Not crazy over the top

Does a large poop mean that they are properly digesting their food or does it mean that they are expelling all the good stuff?

On the other side, whast would a small, firm poop indicate?

Inquiring minds want to know! :confused2

btw....small poops would be good! Less to clean up! :eek2::lol::lol:

We should also consider the size of the dog. Tiny Duncan's are thinner and longer, while big lady Abigail's are much thicker and shorter. They both eat TOTW (I rotate through the flavors). When they are on raw (we're having supply issues but hopefully sorting those out and can resume soon), they have MUCH smaller, compact stools that are easier to clean and fewer in number. That's one of the reasons we love to feed raw and want to resume asap.

Very timely post.

Bentley and Lexi used to eat almost the same thing... 2/3 C TOTW Sierra Mountain formula.

Lexi consistently pooped 3-4 times a day, and always bigger than Bentley's.

Bentley goes 1-2 times a day, a lot of small, thin, short pieces.

They were both going less when on California Natural.

Now Lexi is eating 1 C TOTW per day, and poops 4-5 times a day. It's sort of frustrating. I wonder if I need to switch her food because she isn't absorbing all the nutrients.

What a interesting subject and the different sizes!! Maggie's is more long and trim more finger size and Zak's is more thick- thumb size and he takes his time drops some off then walks a few more feet and drops the rest- his looks more clumpy than Maggies. I wonder if he needs a bit of pumpkin?

 :biggrin2:
I'm sorry, this is too funny. All I know is that Sandstorms poops are solid, haven't changed although I switched his food, and he goes twice a day. I have seen horrible smelly awful looking poop from other dogs, and I just assumed they weren't supposed to be real smelly or awful looking.

I know it just seems ridiculous! But it could be very telling as to the quality of food maybe?

It would be interesting (:biggrin2::lol::rolleyes2:) to compare the poops of those who feed raw vs. commercial; and one commercial brand vs. another.....don't you think?

I know firm poops are good...but BIG poops? :confused2:

My raw fed Shelties poop one turd a day, smaller than my thumb, and hard. If not picked up, they dry up into dust and blow away.

I have incorporated some kibble into their diet, for the variety and because sometimes I'm lazy. I just bought a new bag, and the first day the farts were room clearing, the second day the turds doubled in size and got soft. They got raw today, and the turds are back to normal.
