Prayers for Logan please...

Aw, that's such an adorable photo. It makes me sad, and you must be exhausted. Sweet Logan I'll thinking of you all.

This is part of the road you are travelling. He will likely change his eating habits frequently. Cody ate the kidney food for a couple of weeks, and one day just stopped. Eggs are very good. It is one of the most complete nutritional foods you can offer. Just the whites, not the yolk. The yolk is high in phosphorus, and high phosphorus foods should be avoided. Try the kidney food in a couple of days, he may go back to it. Check out http://nutritiondata.self.com/ You can input any food, and it will tell you the nutritional value of that food. This will be helpful in your search for foods that will help to keep his numbers stable.
BTW, I love Logan's face. So soulful...

I've also been following your Logan thread, rejoicing along with everyone else over any positive news. Oh, I just want to kiss him between his eyes and right on his nose! What a sweet face! Sending you strength, optimism, and love as you must deal with all these issues with your precious Logan. Have faith in yourself because you are such a great dog-mom, always doing everything the best you can. Logan could ask for no more!! Xoxoxo

Thanks Caro, RickyR and Jams for your support...

RickyR sounds like you have had a great deal of experience with this disease.
If Cody ate the food again I have hope. Thanks for the link! Very helpful!

He is a sweaty...

Logan will not eat again this morning. Refused both foods. Tried a hard boiled egg with whites only. No go. Then I made scrambled eggs for him with whites only. Still no go.

I wish the vet was open. Hate to take him to emergency in his condition.
He is sleeping now. Gave him a pain pill so he is resting comfortably.

I did eat three kidney treats but that was all he wanted.

Gloria, when Cody was diagnosed, it was advanced kidney disease. Our vet told us when caught early, kidney disease could be managed, and the dog could live for a long time. But in our case, 3-6 months. It hit us like a ton of bricks. Cody was my heart dog, and I was determined to make the time he had left as comfortable as possible. I became obsessed with learning all I could about this terrible disease. Cooked special meals for him. We would go to the store and buy all types of foods. When he ate, we were happy, but after a day or two, we were searching for something else to try. Sub Q fluids helped to make him comfortable, and he was a real trooper when we administered the fluids. Despite our best efforts, he only lasted 3 months. Now, anytime I see that someone else is battling this disease, my heart just breaks. I am by no means an expert, I can only offer you what I have learned and my personal experiences. I want so much for you to be successful in your battle. Don't think you need to go the emergency room, the fact that he ate the cookies is good. He may not eat at all the rest of the day. Do call the vet tomorrow. May be time to start fluids. Try cream of wheat cereal. Mix in boiled egg whites. This was one of Cody's favorites. He would eat it for a few days, and stop, but he would always go back to it. You are doing a great, Logan is in very good hands!

Thanks for your direction, help, and support RikyR!

The despair I feel when he won’t eat is so debilitating. I came inside after doing a little yard work to clear my mind and I thought to try some boiled rice and ground beef. To my surprise I got a a half a hamburger and a half cup of rice in him! Breathing a little easier now. He ate two more biscuits too. He is sleeping on the tile in the bathroom now resting comfortably.

Will definitely call the vet tomorrow and I am sure he will want to do another blood test. Maybe subQ fluids will be in our future!

I am so sorry about the loss of Cody your heart dog! When they won’t eat you are desperate to do anything to help. I wish you had more time with him. Logan thanks him for you offering your care and concern with your struggles with kidney failure.

Gloria, my heart breaks for you and Logan. I know the uncertainty and exhaustion of struggling with a dog who's ill and eating sporadically. It is so stressful. I'm so sorry you're going through this with Logan. I hope the vet can give you some direction when you get in to see him. It also sounds like Riky has given you some good advice.

For what it's worth, I use a probiotic that is a powder which dissolves in water and can be mixed with the food or a tiny bit of water and syringed in the dog's mouth. It's from Natures Farmacy and it's their Probio Max. All my dogs get it. It's tasteless and they don't know it's there.

Sending prayers and hope your way and hugs to you. :hugs

Ahhhh, Gloria - I know this all too well. Skye and Ally went on and off with what they would eat as well. Fluids really helped, but if Logan is in CHF or has a risk of it, fluid overload is NOT good. But it is all a balancing act. With Ally it was pancreatitis on top of the kidney failure. There is Cerenia which really helps with nausea, it is expensive though.

My heart sank reading your posts - I remember struggling with feeding my kidney girls and feeling like a failure when they wouldn't eat. But my vet would remind me, missing a meal or two is NOT the end of the world. We tend to fixate on that, at least I know I did. Please know you and Logan are in my thoughts and hoping you can balance things enough to keep him comfortable and happy. :hugs
That face is beyond precious.

Sharon's post reminded me that I found Cerenia at 1/4 the price of what my vet charges at Alivet. My vet gets $10 a pill and here it's $14 for four. Still not cheap, but if you need it on an ongoing basis it's quite a saving. You'll need a prescription from your vet for it but most of them will give you one.
