we used Volhard puppy aptitude testing for choosing Che and it worked out very well, his breeder let us have first pick and Che was it.
If I have to eval next puppy I would def go CARAT road, I have heard from professionals that you know exactly what you get, very precise testing.

Fascinating thread. I don't know how everyone else marked but as mine are both older dogs I selected an answer based on how they were over their lifetimes, rather than now. For example, Revel used to play tug more when he was younger so I have given it a score although he has grown out of it now. I did however exclude behaviours only seen during the puppy year, such as pouncing on their toys.

This is pretty accurate as Revel is undoubtedly a pack orientated dog, very self assured (he is pack leader not just of my dogs but my friends as well.) He can maintain discpline with look and posture so no need for agressive behaviour but if challenged by another entire male he won't back off. I would say he is an alpha dog. He doesn't have a very high chase drive either which I have found made him harder to train as he was a less enthusiastic player.

Yogi's prey drive is his highest area, but only just. He is a very confrontational dog which is reflected in the very high fight score. I think there are a couple of others with the same score in this area but not higher. A dubious honour?! He is self confident rather than self assured, which makes him brash and too big for his boots really. I was only surprised that he scored as high as 45 in Pack, but he has become more companionable since he was poorly. I think it made him realise no sheltie is an island as previously he was very aloof indeed.

Sca never growls. When playing frisbee or tennis ball he does kind of grunt when pouncing. He also barks (multiple tones) and grumbles but no growl.

I notice almost all the Shelties are very low in fight/flight explains why they seem to always get along with other Shelties. A couple of 40's but nothing high like the pack/prey ratings. Very interesting even in a unscientific poll

I am betting Cranberry has rating similar to Sca with maybe a bit higher in fight though it sounds like Dixie rules last I remember (except when Grandma Callie puts the paw down)

Romeo's pack drive is so low! Not that I'm surprised about that Hi low prey drive also doesn't surprise me given that I had to work so hard to get him to tug! What's a dog that has low EVERYTHING?? One that doesn't do anything but lie around all day??

Juliet's figures are quite accurate. She's far more ready to fly than fight and she seems to hang on my every word. She's more my shadow than Romeo and follows me e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e. whereas Romeo might still go "yea you go ahead first I'll meet you back here".

See, I gave him a 3 on being hesitant to come, because he won't come to me if he knows he's about to be groomed. lol. Now we can see just how mellow my old man is...however, he's always been non-sheltie like.

Yup, little boy has his issues. lol. Oh yeah, in regards to growling, Koji only growls when he's playing tug. I've never heard him growl otherwise. Miko has growled at Koji or other dogs when they invade his space, but never at people.

I wasn't surprised at all by Toby's scores, especially since he LOVES attention and tends to be anxious. Their description of "Low prey, high pack and low defense – this is a real charmer. He will follow you around all day and it is doubtful that he will get into trouble. Likes to be with you and is not interested in chasing." fits Toby's personality completely.
