Rally Training

I don't know why but it seems to me that they make those premium books so hard to understand, I have yet to get it right.. I always get a call afterwards with a correction ammount :)

Don't feel bad. I've done that and had to pay more. You would think since I have enter 200+ shows I would know how to do it. So I get to my last agility show with Ember and my number isn't there. Go see the show secretary. Argh! not again. But his time I overpaid by 5 dollar and got a refund. :rolleyes2: Also one time I forgot to put Justice's UKC number on the form. I needed to look it up and forgot. I know the AKC #'s by heart. At least you are in Rally Novice A. I was in Utility B and Open B and my dog had his UOCH. I'm supposed to know better. I need serious help.

LOL. Okay, I don't feel so bad. It was the first time I filled out a Rally one, however, I totally did the pricing wrong. In agility, I'm usually running twice at least, so I get to use the "2nd run for the dog" lower price. and then I just double it for Sunday. Duh. I added up those two. Versus, the single price per day! Oops. Oh well. At least I got all of his info in there. Even got the jump height in there, although 1. it wouldn't matter no jumps and 2. that's probably wrong too, because he really shouldn't be jumping 12" (old man).

I just realized I need to read the rules. Oops. just to get a feel for them. I am getting excited, nervous, and tired of training daily. Miko got another day off because I was so frustrated with him. Get this, he went to drink water, then came in to the living room and peed in the middle of the room. WTF! That was the strangest thing. No whining, no chuffing, nothing. I think he's mad at us.

Oh you guys. I'm so proud of my little boy. He's really getting the front to heel position. I've kinda given up on walking around him for now and working on his heeling. I hate that he has to take two steps back to sit down. Sheesh! But working in it. Treating on when he's in good or decent position.

I worked with him last night, wow! He's doing so great! His heeling is great. He's keeping up with me on turns and stuff. Lagging so his nose is right at my leg (in the back position), but that's a big improvement than lagging WAY beyond me. I've been working against the wall (or anything) and I think that's helped a lot.

Ooo..tonight I think I'll work on down and walking around him a bit.

I set-up a training session for tomorrow, this will be interesting. I think she'll see a lot of progress. If I remember (and if DH goes with me) I'll try to get some video or at least photos.

My one concern is his energy level. I worked with him for 10-15 mins. And when I took him to go potty about 45 mins later, my gawd, he was soooo slow. I think Saturday will rock and Sunday, he'll just lag. I'll need to make sure he gets a lot of sleep. Poor thing. I may even carry him to the ring. LOL. One month to go.

If there's any signs you think I should work on, what would you say those are? As in, what signs do you think are either the most difficult, you get most points taken off, or you see a lot of?

Thanks. And thanks for reading my training thread. I just get so excited to see how fast he's picking up things. Y'know, old dog, new tricks (esp new to clicker training).

so if he is heeling pretty well, that is most of the battle. there will be lots of turns and changes in direction. at least one front and depending on judge's choice- finish left or right. Callie pretended for a while that she had never seen or heard of finish left. also depending on the judge, the 3 sits- either sit front and step back (1 step, 2 steps, 3 steps) with dog coming with you or sit at heel and step forward- same as above. One day at our trial in Sep- judge didn't use either of those, next day, different judge did use them. same deal with serpentine/spirals and those shouldn't be too bad if heeling is going well. only thing to worry about there is you doing the right thing when you get to the cones. My friend entered the wrong side for the serpentine and lost points on that- always enter from left like weave poles. and I did the serpentine when I should have been spiraling. I realized that I did it wrong and fixed it before going on to the next sign :wink2:
and the only other challenge is dog sitting or down while you walk around

Thanks for all that info. I will work on heeling and going around things (serpentine/spirals). And yes, thankfully, agility taught me which side to enter. lol. If it was the other side, I'd be screwed. I'll have to remember to read the signs as I'm walking toward them, you guys can do a walk through, right?

Ah, the dog sitting. SOOOO.....a woman I train agility with, mainly does obedience and rally, she gave me a hint. She said, you can put your hand in front of his face as you walk around. You'll lose points, but better that than the full 10 for failing to perform. I was hoping that was true. We could really use the extra points.

Guess I'd better work on my finishing left/right. I admit, I laughed when you said Callie PRETENDED that she never heard of finishing left. And although his fronts aren't perfect (he's too far away), at least he does the 1-2-3 pretty well. Will work on closeness too.

I'll be happy if we pass with 71. :)

No training video because I didn't go to "class". I got sick instead. Then it's supposed to rain this week. So I rescheduled it for my next Friday off (in 2 weeks). I'll ask hubby to take a short video. That way, you guys can see what I've been up to. :) I wish he would have taken something the first time, then we can watch him progress. He's doing so well. Another weekend off due to me trialling with Koji (and being sick). Back to the grind tomorrow. Oooo....video. I'll tell him to tape me doing some things inside.

Yes there is always a walk through. It is usually 15 minutes before the scheduled class time.

Make sure you keep track of the course and look at the numbers as you approach each sign. Bailey was 1000x better at our second trial this weekend. However, I walked us right past the 3rd sign, so we NQ'd :(

Glad to hear Bailey did better this weekend....bummer about the NQ for missing the sign. So there are numbers on the signs? or cones like agility? I think the woman I train with uses colored cones (non-orange).

btw, i hate when they use cones for the circles and cones for other things, and they all look like they should be together. sneaky judges.

Here's a short video of some of the things we've been working on. I didn't do everything "to standard" because I wasn't sure if hubby could get it on tape. I also went from a 1-2-3 front straight into a front-finish right. The point was to show you how he's doing. I noticed when he comes around, he wants to finish sideways. I also noticed he can't eat his treats with his butt on the ground, that's why he keeps standing up, lol.

However, when I first started this thread, he wouldn't heel fast, he wouldn't do a finish at all (oh, he'll do the left one pretty well too), so I'm happy with his progress. Wish I could show you more, but wouldn't want to bore you guys, lol.

Thanks for the support and help. Looks like I have 28 more days.

Miko's short training video

Official video of Miko doing a course. Yay. My trainer said I'd lose 3 for redoing the 360 (went the wrong direction) and points off for lagging, but I'd still Q. She said I should go a little faster (I was like faster? What? This isn't agility, lol), but Miko seemed to do really great. She said my handling was great too.

Things to work on. We're getting close, 2 more weeks!

Miko is looking really good. You come a long way in a short time.

When your dog is lagging going faster will help them keep up. Slowing down and looking back will slow them down even more. The dog cues off the pressure of the shoulder position. If you turn back to look at him and shift your shoulder backwards that will push him back farther and sometimes out. Try to keep your shoulders squared up(pretend your torso does not twist at the waist) and only turn your head or better yet only shift you eyes towards Mijo to watch him and you should see Mijo speeding up and not lagging as much.:smile2:
