Oh my gosh, I'm in shock. Yesterday I was reading your posts and was amazed how we'd gotten to 10 pages of good stories after the bad news. It's just heart breaking our beautiful sweet babies are being taken too soon by cancer.
You have been such a wonderful owner, giving Riley so much sunshine in his last months. I am so glad he wasn't alone, but being gently stroked with love and care.
Oh dear, Tully has gone outside in the dark, it upsets her when I cry. It just seems we have so much sad news lately.
Yes Cindy, Piper and Finnie certainly help to lift my spirits for a time. I've been giving them lots of hugs and kisses and telling them how much I love them. The house is VERY quiet without him here, even the other two didn't bark when I fed them this morning. Piper and Finnie are very subdued today, of course they're probably picking up on our emotions as well.I am stunned to read this.....You are fortunate to have Piper and Finnie to comfort you.
And when Gavin goes I hope it can be with me holding him like your mom was petting Riley.....
Thank you so much Gloria...it's never easy, wether we choose the time or they do. But your right...much better that he passed at home rather than a scary vet clinic. I also take much comfort knowing he's with his original owner...she too died very suddenly as did her mother (who allowed me to take him into my home). A very lovely family who experienced much heartache and now they are complete again.Oh Lisa, as tears are running down my face as I read your post it was both sad and happy tears. So sad at the sudden loss of Riley but happy that he was given the absolute best of care with more love than any dog could receive.
Tell your mom he was comforted by her loving touch and he passed peacefully at home where he felt safe and not in a scary vets office!
My heart goes out to you and your mom. Virtual hugs to you! Please let me know if there is anything I can do. Wishing your both comfort in the days and weeks to come.
RIP Riley... you were a much loved and cherished companion.
Thank you for sharing you beautiful pictures of Riley! So heartwarming.

Oh gosh. Reading your post made me think again how rare it is that the end plays out the way we think it will. Only Brooke passed as expected - and I tried mightily to make it so. If you can think about it this way, what a blessing he drifted off as you said, with your mom stroking him, knowing till his last breath that he was loved and cherished. Wouldn't we all like to go that way?
I'm sorry for the shock, though, and I'm sure your mom is upset. My two were also very subdued after we lost Brooke, as they saw her afterwards and sniffed her all over. I kinda think that's better than the dog who suddenly disappears to the vet and never comes back home.
You gave Riley a great life and made his last days as enjoyable as can be. I hope the good memories can comfort you in time.![]()

Your so right Sharon. Of course had the vet known or been able to tell me what to expect perhaps I could've been prepared but I had no idea that this would happen. I thought he'd just get slower and have a harder time all around. Just a week ago I told my sister how good he was doing and that maybe the vet was wrong. My sister (who lost a dog to cancer) said they're good until they're not good. I had no idea.....
