Sheltie Weight...

I’m with Sharon. I like to keep their weight in check. They’re healthier and more active. All of mine except for Sprite are around 15 inches. If they weighed the 24 pounds the chart calls for they’d be rolling. They’re all between 20 and 22 pounds. Sprite is 19 pounds and 14 inches.

I am constantly watching Minnie's weight. She's currently 20 lbs at 15 inches, I had to cut back on her food. It's tricky because we do training and agility, I use tiny bits of cheese and 1 calorie treats

I'm actually surprised that Finnie took to it so easily. It's my goal that they'll want to go on it daily and I won't have to have them on leash (I'm sitting in front of treadmill keeping an eye on him). Definitely not there yet but they were both on it yesterday for 12 minutes and both did great. You have no idea of cold it gets here...I'd sometimes wait for the temperature to warm up a bit (if you want to call that warmer lol) to -15 but that's not counting windchill!

That's fantastic, Lisa! That's exactly how mine walk on it, and at the same pace. Once they know how to do it, they're pretty good although mine would never stay on without me holding them on a leash. They'd just stop and sliiiiide off the back! You may have seen this one already, it's been around for years. It's so Sheltie!

You know how to reach me lol...just stand on treadmill with your feet to the sides (off the belt), get Beau in between your legs (have some treats in your hand)...collar and leash on Beau so you can control him and start treadmill out really slow, 1/2 mile or less. As you start it give him treats to stay on and praise him. If he's skittish just do for a few seconds, stop treadmill, and big big praise...make a really big deal about it and treat. Increase amount of time and lots of praise as he's walking. When he's comfortable on it by himself just move to front and hold leash while he walks and keep praising him. He'll get it in no time. You could start with playing with him for a couple minutes before he gets on and then finish with a quick play session. Walking on the treadmill is boring and if you make it lots of fun he'd want to use it!
Oh and keep the other dogs away...they'd get too amped up watching Beau have all the fun!

I finally got a fairly accurate measurement, so here is Kip’s updated data.
16.75” and 22.6 lbs.
According to that chart (the yankee Sheltie site, not Caro’s chart) he is way below average for weight. But obviously that chart doesn’t have enough data. I think he’s a healthy weight

Edited: He is also somewhat below average on Caro’s chart.

My chart includes overweight and normal weight Shelties - possibly a few underweight but I bet there aren't as many. Unless they are sick though, it's generally better for a dog to be under, esp if they are active or competing in sports (or have joint issues). But it's also so dependent on the dog - Tully and Della are the same weight atm, Tully is an inch shorter but very underweight and Della is overweight.

Okay, I've opened up the chart if you want to add your own. You need to follow the link below to edit. If there's been a big change since you last added your dog and they are older, feel free to add an extra one for them - I know my dog's weight dropped a lot when they got old.

Lisa - It is amazing - what a good boy

I do not think it went with Minnie
- she would definitely look at me as if I had gone crazy

But we also go for a real walk by the beach every morning of approx. 3 km = 1.86 mil

but i never liked to see dogs on treadmills

But I know how much you all love your dogs
and that you will never do bad things to them
and it also appears they are happy to train

I must / will definitely change my attitude from today
it must also be better with a run - than to be starved
