Surgery for Checkers

Good news that all went well. Checkers is so beautiful, and I know you want her home quickly. Thank you for information on ultrasounds, I had no idea about this disease.

Checkers' gallbladder shows the beginning of forming mucoceles, an issue that is very common in Shelties and can very quickly be fatal if not treated immediately. We were lucky in that Checkers has been having regular ultrasounds (along with all of my other dogs over 5) to check her gallbladder, and we are catching this before it's a crisis.

Please consider having your Shelties checked by ultrasound after age 5. This is such a serious issue and emergency surgery requires specialized vets and is very expensive. If your vet doesn't have an ultrasound machine, ask for a referral to one who does for this.

I trust my my vet and the surgeon who will do the procedure, but I'll be on pins and needles until it's over and I can bring my precious girl home.

Hi everyone...thanks again for the good wishes. Checkers is home and doing well, although affronted to be in a crate. She trotted out to the car like she was going in the show ring. Eating was a concern, but she was very happy to have some chicken and rice when we got home. She has lots of meds and instructions for the next few days, but I think she's in pretty good shape considering the surgery was yesterday.

A while ago, I did a thread on gallbladder mucoceles and its prevalence in Shelties. For anyone who missed it or can't find it, here is a link to the ASSA health paper on GM in Shelties. It's important to be aware, and have your dog checked for it!
 
I have a freind who has lost several dogs to this loathsome disease. I am so glad Checkers is doing better, Ann! Love from all of us at Nattering Springs!

No, actually once she heals in a few weeks she can go right back to her normal food. She’ll stay on her milk thistle supplement but other than that she’ll be perfectly normal. Apparently the gallbladder isn’t really needed and neither humans nor dogs miss it!
